DT@W – consultancy that looks at digital transformation through the people lens
To begin
DL – Direct resonsibilty of digital activity – digital job titles
Digital leadership – emerging capabilities & competencies that all leaders must adopt to be fit to lead their organisations in the digital age
Charity Comms
Rise of heads of digital
Now established – commonplace approach
Manage channels –
Help evolve the org’s digital maturity
What are the trends for digital leaders now??
Firstly –
Increasingly being asked to not just manage digital channels &activities
But also to change the entire org.
This was the case in the past, to some extent - but in 2016 digital transformation is taking on an urgency that can no longer be ignored.
However – difficult to do both
Priorities of product releases, social media etc. against big strategic forward planning
Also, not the same skills?
So we may start to see – and in some cases are already seeing
This split between head of digital VERTICAL
And transformation lead - HORIZONTAL
The next TREND
2016 – do we even need digital anymore?
Well in fact some org have already decided to get rid of the job titles and integrate digital into everyone’s roles
Will we see this in charity sector – perhaps – in some cases, it will already be happening.
The takeaway is that we don’t lose sight of the fact that
We need fundraising, comms, content, etc. not a digital silo
In fact, for any charity that doesn’t already have a digital silo and are happy with how things are, you may realise that you have leapfroged over that phase of needing to centralise and consolidate into a more integrated phase of digital maturity
So going back to Digital Leadership
2016 is the year that digital transformation really lands
Along with the recognition that digital is not a competency that sits in a silo
Rather it is about the culture, the ability to move at speed, etc.
Not web stuff.
This means that digital is now the strategic responsibility of all leaders…
AND Digital leadership must be adopted by all leaders
Here I’m showing you some work we have just done on typical archetypes or personas in organisations and how they are dealing with the complexities and confusion around digital transformation.
So what we recognise is that leadership is changing
WE need leaders to adopt completely new competencies and capabilities to be able to lead their organisations through digital transformation and to be able to lead in the digital age. They have to learn completely new skills.
So to be clear, we are not talking about getting them to do a “Code in a day” course or Tweet –
Instead we are talking about leaders away from leadership styles that rely on Control, Silos, Planning, Hierarchy, and especially having the answers-
To a place where they must be much more comfortable with not knowing the answers, with collaboration , experimentation, and rapid change – they need to adopt these new competencies and still be strong leaders.
SO I am just about out of time – so thank you!!
And I have some printout of our archetype work if you are interested in picking one up – come and see me later.
