• Jean Baudrillard was born in 1929
and died 2007, was a famous
French sociologist, philosopher,
cultural theorist and a political
commentator. His work is
commonly associated with
postmodernism and explicitly
post structuralism. He is well
known for his studies on
mediation and communication.
With his knowledge and
understanding he wrote about
controversial topics surrounding
social history, consumerism and
gender. Even though he
highlighted many topics during
his career he is very well known
for his theory.
3. Jean
Baudrillard
Simulacra: Are copies that
represent things that either had
no original to begin with, or that
no longer have an original.
Simulation: is the artificial of the
operation of a real-world process
or system over time
Points made by Jean Baudrillard
-Medialization: The media which involves
movies and television keep turning to
history and to various “retro” recreations
of the past is just a symptom for the loss of
history. Baudrillard writes on the NBC how
such media works continue the process of
forgetting history.
-Consumer Society: We live in a culture of
consumption where so much has taken
over our ways of thinking that reality is
sieved through the logic of advertising,
value and exchange. Jean Baudrillard
states “Our society thinks itself and speaks
itself as a consumer society. As much as it
consumes anything, it consumes itself as
consumer society, aside a Advertising is
the triumphal paean to that idea”
Hyper-reality: Is the division between “real”
and simulation has collapsed, therefore its an
illustration of an object that is no longer
possible because the real object is not there.
EXAMPLE
Celebrities who reach a specific point where
their lives is taken care of by someone are
stated to live in a hyper-real world.
In this example celebrities lose the ability to
interact with people on a normal level and
are isolated in hyper-reality.
Fans of celebrities often tries to copy the life
style and persona of the celebrity which
makes the person believes he/she is genuily
living in the same world as the celebrity. This
concludes that people has become more
engaged in the hyper-real world rather than
the actual real world they live in.
