the
Census?
• Every ten years, The United
States counts its population.
We call this count, the Census.
• The goal of the Census is to
count everyone in your
household once, only once, and
in the right place.
• The Census will ask for names,
age, sex, race and the relation
of everyone living in your
household.

4. It’s 100%
Confidential
All personal information
given to the Census is
100% confidential. It
cannot be shared with
other government agencies
including Immigration
because that’s against the
law. If a Census employee
violates the law, they can
face up to 5 years in prison
and a $250,000 fine.

5. Why is the Census so
important?
The Census is important for Fairfax County residents
because it directly benefits every resident here. It
determines how your tax dollars are distributed in
Northern Virginia to better serve you and your
neighborhood on a host of issues including:
Education Healthcare Housing
Infrastructure Roads

6. Did you know our neighborhoods lose money when
residents don’t respond to the Census?
It’s estimated Northern Virginia loses $1200 in potential annual
funding for every resident who does not respond to the Census.

That is money we could lose for education, healthcare,
housing, infrastructure, roads and a host of other services
that the government provides.

• This is the day you will note exactly
where you are living when
completing your Census form
online, by mail or over the phone.
• Residents should receive an
invitation by mail from the Census
Bureau by Mid-March.

Completing Your
Census
• In the past residents received the
Census form to fill out and return,
however for the first time in 2020,
you will be instructed to fill your
Census out online using a
computer, tablet or smartphone.
• If you don’t have access to the internet
or don’t feel comfortable filling the
Census out online, you can request a
form by mail or respond to the Census
by phone as well.
