Economic Outlook
 Outlook for 2019 became more uncertain for the region due to the 35-day
partial government shutdown in the beginning of the year
 The long-term impact still unclear
 Other headwinds for the future performance of the economy include:
 Debt ceiling suspension expires on March 1, 2019
 Sequester-level discretionary spending caps return on October 1, 2019
 Decelerating global markets
 Rising interest rates
 Current economic expansion is second longest in history at 116 months

 After a slow recovery from the Great Recession and sequestration,Virginia’s economic
performance picked up the pace in 2018
 The increase in federal government contract spending as a result of the Bipartisan Budget Agreement
of 2018 bodes well forVirginia’s economy in the short-term
 Attracting Amazon’s HQ2 to NorthernVirginia is also expected to provide a boost to the region’s
economic performance and spur innovation
 Employment gains inWashington Metro region were above the historical average in
2018
 Three sectors – professional and business services, education and health services, and leisure and
hospitality – outperformed their historic job growth pattern in 2018
 Office vacancy rates in the County continue to decline
 The amount of empty office space declined to 18.4 million sq. ft.
 Growth in the County’s FY 2020 real estate tax base of 3.6% is on par with last year
