It’s a great story: your business desperately needs email and collaboration to be successful, but let’s face it: Exchange and SharePoint are far from easy to implement or run. To the rescue come Microsoft’s Office365 offering, allowing you to buy that critical email and collaboration functionality as a utility, just like you do electricity or water, and you don’t have to have an IT geek to pull it off! But as easy as Office365 makes this, it’s still not a piece of cake to pull it off and fall in love with what you have. Because it’s such a simple and compelling story, there’s a tendency to gloss over, ignore, or fail to allow for some minor issues and limitations that can unfortunately add up to irritation, frustration, or even worse, a loss of productivity and profit. This session is less about the numerous benefits and features of the new Office365 offerings from Microsoft Online Services and more about how you need to be able to identify the small things that can trip you up and be prepared to address them proactively. One of the first things an IT Pro learns when they tackle SharePoint is how tightly coupled SharePoint is to SQL Server; it can’t function without it. The session will cover topics such as common gotchas, tools and checklists for making sure SharePoint is still in good shape, and key metrics to keep an eye to identify growth and usage of the system. It will also introduce SharePoint admins to concepts such as adding new servers to an existing farm and how to apply SharePoint updates and patches.

It comes down to this: all the backups in the world aren't going to do you a bit of good if you don't know how to restore them when you need to. In this presentation, SharePoint expert and author John Ferringer will help you turn the focus away from what you should do before a disaster and start thinking about what you need to do after it. That’s not to say that an organization can’t or won’t save money by going to a cloud service like Office 365, but there are a lot of times when the amount of effort involved in making that move is not immediately apparent. This session will provide attendees with an overview of the most common activities that organizations will find require technical expertise and knowledge when taking their business “to the Cloud!” with Office 365. It will also explore the technical details of those activities, providing IT Pros with an understanding of how they can be executed as well as tips and tricks to help ensure a successful deployment.

In SharePoint Online’s world it’s Microsoft’s way or the highway, and that means that software designers and developers have to approach solution design and creation in a much different manner than for on premises custom solutions. This class presents a comprehensive review of the tools and features available for development with SharePoint Online and then takes a closer look at their capabilities and limitations. It also explains the shift in decision making and solution design that needs to occur to turn SharePoint Online’s restrictions into opportunities, as well as looks at other available resources for development with SharePoint Online, such as Microsoft’s Azure offering or Amazon’s Cloud Services.

Proper use of virtual servers can help an organization reduce costs, optimize hardware utilization, and add flexibility to its IT infrastructure. So when someone comes to you and says they want to virtualize SharePoint, the answer is always “Yes”, right? Not necessarily. SharePoint has always proven itself to be a unique platform in so many ways, and it’s no different with server virtualization. This presentation will address the advantages and disadvantages of virtualizing the components of the SharePoint platform, including both present and future releases, and cover the common traps you will encounter if applying general virtualization approaches to SharePoint. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
