DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES
SYMPTOMS - STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN
Review the system description and operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to
Steering Wheel and Column Description and Operation.
Visual/Physical Inspection
 Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the steering wheel and column.
 Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could
cause the symptom.
Symptoms List
Refer to a symptom diagnostic procedure from the following list in order to diagnose the symptom:

Diagnostic Aids
 If the cruise control indicator works but the heated steering wheel indicator does not, then the problem
does not lie with the BCM or with the LED signal circuit.

 The heated steering wheel will remain ON if the heated steering wheel switch is disconnected while the
heated steering wheel is ON.

1. Remove the SIR inflator module from the
steering wheel. Refer to Inflatable Restraint
Steering Wheel Module Replacement
2. Turn the ignition ON, and press the heated
steering wheel switch once.
3. Disconnect the heated steering wheel switch. It is
a grey connector on the left side of the steering
wheel.
4. Measure the voltage on the heated steering wheel
switch LED control circuit with a DMM
connected to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing .
Is battery voltage present on the circuit when the heater
is ON? Go to Step 4 Go to Step 5

Measure the voltage and frequency on the heated
steering wheel switch LED signal circuit, with a DMM
connected to B+. Refer to Circuit Testing .
Does the DMM measure 8.0 - 12.6 volts, and 130 Hz
frequency, between the LED signal circuit and B+? Go to Step 7 Go to Step 6

Test the heated steering switch LED control circuit for
an open. Refer to Circuit Testing .

1. Remove the SIR inflator module from the
steering wheel. Refer to Inflatable
Restraint Steering Wheel Module

2. Disconnect the heated steering wheel
switch connector. It is a grey connector on
the left side of the steering wheel.
3. Test the switch for continuity, making
sure that the switch is pressed as you test,
between the switch signal side and the
ground side of the switch. Refer to
Circuit Testing .
Did you find continuity in the switch?

1. Disconnect the green connector at the
bottom of the steering wheel (C227).
2. Test the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the
heated steering wheel module for an open
or short to ground. If the circuit is open,
Inspect both the 7.5 A inline fuse near the
SIR coil and the 15 A HTD STR/WHL
fuse in the underhood fuse block. Refer to
Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

1. Disconnect the lower intermediate shaft from the upper intermediate shaft. Refer to Lower Intermediate
Steering Shaft Replacement.
2. Remove the nuts from the studs.

  • 8. DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES SYMPTOMS - STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN Review the system description and operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to Steering Wheel and Column Description and Operation. Visual/Physical Inspection  Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the steering wheel and column.  Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom. Heated Steering Wheel Indicator Malfunction Step Action Yes No Schematic Reference: Steering Wheel Schematics Connector End View Reference: Steering Wheel and Column Connector End Views DEFINITION: The heated steering wheel operates OK, but the indicator will not turn ON. 1 Did you review the Heated Steering Wheel operation and perform the necessary inspections? Go to Step 2 Go to Steering Wheel and Column Description and Operation 2 1. Turn the ignition ON. 2. Press the heated steering wheel switch. Does the heated steering wheel indicator turn ON? Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections Go to Step 3 3 1. Remove the SIR inflator module from the steering wheel. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement 2. Turn the ignition ON, and press the heated steering wheel switch once. 3. Disconnect the heated steering wheel switch. It is a grey connector on the left side of the steering wheel. 4. Measure the voltage on the heated steering wheel switch LED control circuit with a DMM connected to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing . Is battery voltage present on the circuit when the heater is ON? Go to Step 4 Go to Step 5 4 Measure the voltage and frequency on the heated steering wheel switch LED signal circuit, with a DMM connected to B+. Refer to Circuit Testing . Does the DMM measure 8.0 - 12.6 volts, and 130 Hz frequency, between the LED signal circuit and B+? Go to Step 7 Go to Step 6 5 Test the heated steering switch LED control circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing . Did you find and correct the condition? Go to Step 13 Go to Step 8 6 Test the heated steering switch LED signal circuit for an open or short to voltage. Does the system operate normally? - Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections Go to Step 3 Test the ignition voltage circuit at the underhood fuse block for an open or short to ground.   • 12. 3 to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs . Did you find and correct the condition? - Go to Step 14 Go to Step 4 4 1. Remove the SIR inflator module from the steering wheel. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement 2. Disconnect the heated steering wheel switch connector. It is a grey connector on the left side of the steering wheel. 3. Test the switch for continuity, making sure that the switch is pressed as you test, between the switch signal side and the ground side of the switch. Refer to Circuit Testing . Did you find continuity in the switch? - Go to Step 5 Go to Step 9 5 1. Disconnect the green connector at the bottom of the steering wheel (C227). 2. Test the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the heated steering wheel module for an open or short to ground. If the circuit is open, Inspect both the 7.5 A inline fuse near the SIR coil and the 15 A HTD STR/WHL fuse in the underhood fuse block. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs . Did you find and correct the condition? - Go to Step 14 Go to Step 6 6 Test the ground circuit of the heated steering wheel module for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs . Did you find and correct the condition? - Go to Step 14 Go to Step 7 7 1. Disconnect the heated steering wheel connector from the heated steering wheel control module. It is a black connector on the top right of the steering wheel. 2. Measure the resistance of the heated steering wheel heating element. Does the resistance measure within the specified range? 1.58-2.86 ohms (leather wheel) 1.69-2.93 ohms (wood wheel) Go to Step 8 Go to Step 13 IMPORTANT: The thermistor resistance varies according to the temperature.
