Evolution of the Hair Straightener!
What’s the purpose? The whole point to using a hair straightener is to make curly wavy, or frizzy hair, calm and straight. The heat breaks down the hydrogen bonds that are found in the hairs cortex. This makes the hair bendable getting rid of the frizziness. Then the pressure of the two plates together causes the hair to lay straight and get rid of any unwanted bumps.
IRON ROD! The heated rods were invented in 1872 by Marcel Grateau. they were used with chemical lotions that were put on the hair so it would straighten with heat. After awhile the iron rods were stopped being used because people were finding their scalps and hair damaged and burnt because of the heat factor.
THE HEATED COMB! The comb was put in a warming device, until temperature was hot enough to straighten hair. Then it was taken out and pulled through hair. Many people would sit at home and comb their hair for hours, even until the house smelled like burnt hair and scalp.
THE IRON! Up until the 1960’s, everyone wanted curly hair. The person to change that was Joan Baez. She decided she would straighten her hair to go against all of the female stereotypes. Though some people used chemicals to straighten their hair, others found that simply ironing it was less expensive and not messy at all. Though this was more convenient for some people, there were also safety risks. You had to be very careful that you not only did not burn your head or face but also, in 1966 a New York University dermatologist reported that ironing your hair “may cause so much breakage that the hair will look thin in places.”
THE HAIR STRAIGHTENER! the biggest change that has been made to the straightener is controlled heat. All around it makes it safer for all ages, and easier to use. Another change made is that your able to straighten your hair when its wet, its not as effective and takes longer but if you don’t have time to wait for it to dry its often easier. The newest hair sraightener was invented in 1912 by a lady of the name Jennifer Bell schofield. She took the older versions of the model and made it more effective.
Life Cycle of A Hair Straightener! MANUFACTURING: The two plastic handles are molded to make a clamp, and then the two ceramic plates are inserted into the clamp MATERIALS: two ceramic plates, and molded plastic handles FIXING: its more of hassle to fix it yourself, or pay to get it fixed. It would just be easier to buy a whole new one RECYCLYING: the whole hair straightener can be recycled. And it takes 6 to 8 months to be back on shelf new.
