Dear Friends,
May has gone so quickly and June is already finished…I have so much to tell and at the
time to talk about it seems
so far….Well I can tell you May was hot…very very hot and dry…
I have discovered a new fruit, the jackfruit! We were eating it as vegetable when it was
not ripe and now we go with a stick to beat it on the tree and depending on the sound they
give we will know which are sweet….I didn’t know a fruit can be heavy…I mean really
heavy, it can be a full meal at itself…for a full family!!! I have to say that it is pretty big,
can be 5 Kg…and we can even eat the seeds in the curry, the cow loves the waste we
leave…100% useful!!! And a very good break for the workers :) !
June, the high period of the mango, there are huge quantities and it is cheap. The taste is
sooooooo sweet, the texture soooo soft, and the juice so tasty…mmm I’ll have one just
now ;)
June has been good in the north, Jalpaiguri, it was raining every two night and it was
most of the time cloudy, so it was a really nice weather…but in Kolkata there were no
rain, only a heavy sun…the water is missing in the field, the drought started…people are
praying for the monsoon that is really late this year…hopefully I will come later….and it
has started two days ago…what a relief!
About relief, the SIDSA association is working with a great energy and faith. I could
send them financial support to provide food for all (1000 familly is our capacity) and
milk for all the children under 3 years old…on one 1000 family the count is one child
under three year per family!!! Here is a short story to tell you the great work of the
government. As the population is use to cyclone all houses have kerosene oil lamp. We
wanted to deliver also kerosene oil to the sinister people. Actually the government has
taken the action to reduce the cost of oil for the relief that is a great intent. However the
way is a bit…you will see. So the Gov. has told every one that the kerosene oil will be
about half price…but no one except the Gov. itself has access to it! So we have to wait
until the Gov. is going in each and every village to distribute it…there are known for
their lack of efficiency in matter of time…and who knows how many of them will really
get it…well it was just an example to give you an idea of the situation and the need to act
with NGOs.
The pond pumping has started also, it is very important to pump before the monsoon so
the pond will be cleaned and used with soft water. As we have not enough money to
empty all the ponds, the project going on is to empty two ponds per village so the villager
can share. The drinking water program is still running, the malaria, cholera(?) and other
diseases awareness is going on, they are getting information about how to build strong
houses for cheaper than standard knowledge…lots of work is going on…lots of people
are helped…and probably lots of them are not getting any help even with the great help
done by numbers of local NGOs, private initiative, and villager solidarity. Please see the
report of the SIDSA NGO in attachment.

2. All I can tell you is the local people are really very thankful to you, as they know this
local NGO is doing the woks and the funds are yours.

Chers amis,
Les mois de mai et juin ont été si intense que je ne sais pas de quoi vous parler, des aller
venues entre le sud et le nord du West Bengale (12h de train + 3 a 6h de bus), pour
participer à l’aide aux victimes d’Aila, pour le solaire PV, pour le solaire thermiques et
ceci bien sure avec une douce température de 38° a Kolkata et 33° a Siliguri et une

3. humidité relative de 98% ! Il faut dire que la nature donne de si beaux fruits à cette
période que ça donne des ailes. Des manges, des manges et encore de mangues, c’est
presque de la mauvaise herbe…et qu’est ce qu’on aime tous la mauvaise herbe ici !!! Il y
a aussi les jack fruits, très étonnant, le fruit le plus lourd que je n’avais jamais mangé, il
fait le régal des pauses des travailleurs (workshop solaire compris bien sure !). Dans le
nord on supporte assez bien la chaleur du mois de juin grâce aux petite pluie nocturne et
au nuages légers mais quotidien, le mois de mai était trop chaud et juin était un délice…a
Calcutta, c’était le supplice, pas de pluie pas de nuage, beaucoup de coupure de courrant
et donc pas de ventilateur, on fait presque tous des réactions cutanées dû a la chaleur,
boutons de chaleurs ou autre…par moment la chaleur était tel que ça m’en vidait le
cerveau, on ne se rend même pas compte qu’on est la, a attendre, a transpirer, on n’est
hypnotisé par la chaleur…et puis vient le soir, il fait encore plus chaud, mais la cloche
qui nous appel pour manger nous stimule a bouger, a sortir de cet état…puis impossible
de dormir, transpiration intense pendant la nuit jusqu'a ce qu’enfin la température
retombe vers l’aurore. La matinée est alors agréable…mais on appréhende la suite de la
journée…
Pour les nouvelles du workshop solaire, ça avance toujours, on a enfin obtenu une «
recette locale» pour la brasure cuivre qui posait problème. Petite anecdote : suite à ces
complications, j’ai décidé de chercher une solutions ailleurs…quelque chose de local
mais j’avait déjà essaye toutes les solution de mon vendeur…alors oui mais quoi et
comment ? c’est alors que je suis allée me présenter dans un workshop de brasure cuivre
comme il y en a plein les rues de Siliguri dans un certain quartier. Je leur ai demande de
me montrer comment ils faisaient, ils étaient alors content de me montrer leur travail.
C’est alors que je leur ai expliqué notre soucis qu’ils ont bien compris et m’ont donné
tout les ingrédients pour faire du chlorure de Zinc(qui ne se trouve pas sur le marché), ils
ont sortit une énorme masse de zinc pur et brut d’une armoire fermées à clé dont ils ont
cassé un petit morceau pour moi, puis on mis dans une petite bouteille de l’acide
chlorhydrique(pur, sisi !) et m’on dit de mélanger tout ça avec un peu d’eau…que ça
allait « bouillir » qu'il ne fallait par le faire dans un récipient fermé sinon ça explose et
puis si le plastique est épais c’est bien…voila les indications c’est tout, fini pour les
normes de sécurité :) ….c’est pas tout a fait aux normes suisse mais le résultat : nos
brasures sont belles a présent !!! Pour les remercier je suis aller leur offrir des « misti »,
douceurs locale, c’était très sympathique…maintenant le patron veux installer du solaire
PV sur sa maison, je vais lui faire le dimensionnement. Quel bel échange!
Plein de belles avancées, mais toujours il nous faut des pièces qui n’arrivent pas…depuis
deux mois…on fait tout le reste mais ça va nous coincer bientôt…
Concernant Aila, j’ai passé 4 jours avec l’association SIDSA, nous avons pu dans un
premier temps offrir de la nourriture à 1000 familles touchées par les dégâts, des livraison
d’eau potables journalières ont été organisée, une campagne de prévention contre les
moustiques s’est mise en place. Par la suite j’ai reçu beaucoup de don de votre part et
vous en remercie du fond du cœur, un grand merci aussi à tout ceux qui ont pensé aux
victime d'Aila et ont prié pour eux, ici les valeurs spirituelles sont très importantes.
Quelques jours après mon départ ils ont commencé à pomper pour vider les étangs plein
d’eau salée afin de les laisser se remplir d’eau douce pour la mousson, nous avons pu

4. subventionner 3 étangs par village, qu’ils pourront se partager pour les besoins tels que
douche, nettoyage, eau pour le bétails… du lait est distribué pour les enfants de moins de
trois ans (un par famille en moyenne !!), des bougies et des allumettes.
Malheureusement les maladies commencent, la malaria, le cholera(?)…nous allons
intensifié nos campagne de préventions et distribuer des moustiquaires, puis refaire une
distribution de nourriture et…la suite sera fonction des finances, car la reconstruction des
maison revient à près de 800CHF par maison (pour être résistante au prochain cyclone),
les habits reviendraient à 10CHF par famille = 10’000CHF…
Une bonne nouvelle, la « re »construction de la digue semble être prise en main par le
gouvernement.
