This document provides guidance for children with FPIES on staying safe at school. It outlines the "STEP" process: be safe by following your allergy plan, talk to an adult if you may have had a reaction, educate others about your condition, and plan ahead by having safe treats and medications available. The overall message is that knowing these steps can help make school days as healthy and fun as possible for children with FPIES.

2. “S” is for Safety First!

What are the first steps to school safety with
FPIES?




Follow directions in the allergy action plan, if you have one
Let your teachers know about any changes to your list of allergies if
there are any
Only eat foods that you know are safe. Do not be afraid to ask about
ingredients if you are unsure!
Be aware of “trigger foods” around you-- be aware that some art
materials and sensory play materials may contain food ingredients

3. “T” is for Talk to an Adult!

TALK to an adult if:


If you think you accidentally ate something unsafe
If you ate something that you haven't trialed yet and are unsure if
it is safe or not

If your body starts to feel like you are having a reaction

If you are sick in the bathroom and need help
The adult can follow the plan you have in place for reactions once
he/she knows something is wrong. Do not be afraid to speak up!

4. “E” is for Educating Others!

Educating or teaching others about FPIES by:




Bringing FPIES rack cards or awareness cards to the school
nurse and teachers
Explaining to your teacher what foods are safe for you
If another kid asks about FPIES, explain to him/her how
FPIES affects you

5. “P” is for Planning Ahead!

Plan ahead to help you stay safe by:




Having special safe treats on hand for school parties
Packing a lunch of safe foods each day or learn about what safe
foods you can get in the cafeteria
Keeping emergency information about FPIES and your own trigger
foods near you—some kids keep an emergency card in their pocket,
some wear medical ID bracelets, etc.
If you have any medications prescribed for you to use during a
reaction, it is important to know where these are
