3. What Is Vulvodynia?
Vulvodynia is a condition characterized by chronic pain in the vulva ,
which is the external portion of the female organs and includes the vaginal
opening and labia. The discomfort, which can include burning, stinging,
itching, or a dull soreness, can occur occasionally or constantly and last for
months or even years at a time. Even though the pain is very real, the vulva
often appears normal, and, in many cases, doctors cannot pinpoint the
exact cause. Many theories abound, such as past vaginal infections,
sensitivity to chemicals, muscle spasms, or nerve injury.
4. What Is Vulvodynia?
This condition can impair a woman’s life in numerous ways, most notably by
negatively affecting sexual relationships. The chronic pain of vulvodynia
can sap all of the enjoyment out of life, as it may make even walking or
sitting difficult. Many women are embarrassed to seek help, but an
experienced and sympathetic gynecologist can offer self-care tips and
medical treatments that are aimed at relieving symptoms. These treatments
may include nerve blocks, steroids, or topical lidocaine.
