What is Integrated Pest Management?
Integrated Pest Management is the broad based control
approach that integrates practices for control of pests
below the economic injury level and results in safe food
production
4. Creating Innovative

Sustainable Future
IPM – Key message
! Control and Not eradication
! Strict monitoring
! Preventive cultural practices
! Mechanical control
! Biological control
! Responsible use of chemicals

Integrated nutrient management
Application of all sources of Nutrients Organic /
inorganic / bio-fertilizer applied to the soil so that crop
yields are optimized
12. Creating Innovative
Solutions for a
Sustainable Future
Why INM
! Soils supplemented with chemical fertilizers shows
declining productivity due to deteriorating soil
conditions & deRiciency of secondary & micronutrients
! Excess use of fertilizers leads to other environmental
problems such as ground water pollution
13. Creating Innovative
Solutions for a
Sustainable Future
INM
! Fertilizers – natural or synthetic
! Manure / Green Manure / crop residue
! Compost / vermicompost
! Biofertilizer

Solutions for a
Sustainable Future
Biofertilizers
! Preparation containing living or latent cells of micro-
organisms that improve crop yields
! May help in Rixing atmospheric nitrogen (Rhizobium &
leguminous plant root interaction
! Azospirillum, a free living bacteria that form
association with C4 plants such as maize & sugarcane
! Phosphorus solubilizing bacteria & fungus such as
Pseudomonas straita, Bacillus polymixa, Penicilliun
digitatum, Aspergillus awamoori
17. Creating Innovative
Solutions for a
Sustainable Future
Vesicular Arbuocular Mycorrliza (VAM) is formed by the
symbiotic association between certain Phycomycetous
fungi & angiosperm roots.
18. Creating Innovative
Solutions for a
Sustainable Future
! The fungus colonizes the root cortex forming a
mycelia network & characteristics vesicles and
arbusculus (branched Ringer – like hyphe)
19. Creating Innovative
Solutions for a
Sustainable Future
! VAM: helps in phosphorus nutrition by increasing its
availability and increasing the mobility
! Improves the uptake of Zn, Cu & Water
! Enhances resistance to root diseases & improves
transplantation success
! Helps in wasteland reclamation by improving
extended arm to plant root

Center for Mycorrhizal culture collection
World’s largest and unique culture collection of two major categories of mycorrhiza
(Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi & Ectomycorrhizal Fungi) at one place
Also maintains cultures from North American mycorrhizal culture collection INVAM,
from France INRA, and from Belgium BEG

Salient achievements:
! Synthesis and characterization of highly water
soluble and stable nanoformulation of diacyl
and sulfonyl acyl hydrazines by ultrasonic
disintegration method
