3. DYMISTYFYING CROWD FUNDING
Social media fundraising is the joint effort by individuals
using social media platforms or generally the internet
to support a cause company or organization in raising
funds. These individuals are collectively referred to as
the “crowd” hence the name crowd funding.
Crowdfunding, or crowd-sourced fundraising, provides
a revolutionary way to support ideas, causes,
companies and projects across a number of different
fields.
Crowdfunding is typically done on the Internet, since
the Internet is such an efficient way for people to
organize and collaborate.
4. What does the future look like ?
There is undeniable growth and movement on
the internet:
In the next five years >> 5.2 billion internet users
around the world.
Spending an average of at least 15 hours online
daily , and social media accounting for more
and more of this time.
Social networking is the most important part of
any social media fundraising strategy.
With proper utilization of the available tools in
the internet i.e. “ social media platforms the
future of online fundraising is bright “
Kenya has 16,713,319 active users
5.
6. Online fundraising is rapidly rising,
especially on mobile devices.
Nonprofits that have not yet adopted a
mobile-first approach to online
communications and fundraising can use
the new data to help convince executive
staff and board that a new mobile-
compatible website should be high on
their priority list.
16. DRIVING GROWTH THROUGH SOCIAL
MEDIA
Facebook and twitter are the front runners in Kenya having
the largest user base.
More interactive as it streams live tweets as users are tweeting .
This two platforms are the backbone of most or all the biggest
crowdfunding causes to have ever occurred in Kenya.
By learning how to embed social media throughout the
fundraising process, you can turn cause-driven interest into
action and ultimately donations.
Here’s how Social media is changing more than the way we
market and communicate… It’s changing the way we raise
capital.

20. TIPS ON EFFECTIVE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO
RAISE FUNDS
Cultivation
Build reciprocal relationships Engage directly with your
followers by asking and answering questions, and
listening to what they have to say.
Take people on a journey
Create content such as photos, videos and blogs that
bring your mission to life. Tell stories about your
volunteers, the projects you’re working on, and the
people whose lives you touch.
21. Cont…
Solicitation
Have a strong, emotive message Carry a simple, motivating message
through your cause . Show people what they’ll be contributing to if they
donate or fundraise for your cause.
Make donating easy
Invest in a straightforward donation funnel with as few obstacles
for users as possible. Make sure you’re set up to receive
donations through online and mobile channels.
This include-:
Mobile money transfer programe (Mpesa, Airtel Money ,Orange Money
Paypal /Pesapal
Western Union
Dahabshiil
And having a bank account set up for the cause
22. TIPS Cont…
Acknowledgement
Make it personal to thank your donors and supporters on social
media by sharing photos, videos and stories of how they have
helped. Use a familiar tone and recognize donors as individuals.
Make it shareable
Include social sharing buttons on the last step of your donation or
sign up process – such as a thank you page – so supporters can
share with their networks. Include calls to action to let others know
how to get involved.
KOT Army:
If possible have the big wigs of social media rally behind your cause . Have as
many mentions and retweets at possible.
23.
24. 1. Create the Buzz
Create posts about your event that link out to a page on your website that has
more information.
Post pictures and videos to attract followers’ attention. Sometimes, posts get
lost amongst honeymoon pictures and the latest celebrity gossip. Help your
fundraising event stand out by tweaking the way you present it on Facebook.
Create a Facebook event and invite your followers to join. When you make a
Facebook event, you can plug in the time, date, and location of your event as
well as other important information. Creating a Facebook event also allows
you to see how many of your followers plan on attending your fundraiser.
Promote your event by paying few dollars to Facebook and maximize the
reach .
Get the word out there!
25. 2. #HashTag it!
If your nonprofit has a large Twitter following, consider
using a hashtag for tweets related to your fundraiser.
Hashtags will help your followers to find relevant
information about your fundraiser and easily interact
with your nonprofit.
Plus, if enough of your followers use the hashtag, it could
end up trending nationally or even globally! Trending
hashtags are seen by all Twitter users and have the
potential to give your fundraising event even more
attention.
26. 3. Go
The great thing about YouTube videos is that they’re extremely
shareable. You can post a video and share it on Facebook, Twitter,
Tumblr, GooglePlus, and even Pinterest!
But keep your videos short. Few people want to sit through a video
that lasts longer than five minutes. By keeping your message to the
point, you’ll be able to capture followers’ attention and give them
more information about your event.
Additionally, YouTube videos have a certain human quality to
them. Instead of seeing a link or a Tweet, a potential donor can see
an actual person telling their story.
27. LAWS / TAXES AND LEGISLATION
Crowdfunding is usually divided into 4 different types of
funding; donation, reward, lending and equity. Each
type of crowdfunding is regulated differently.
Any donations received are liable for tax, unless an
exception is granted. The investors’ tax benefit
entitlement is depending on whether the receiving
charitable institution is certified or not. If donations are
given to an uncertified institution, the donations will not
be tax-deductible.
In Kenya the tax and regulations only apply when the
donated money is moving in between bank accounts.
28. “Crowdfunding is much like a bushfire. It
may start in a small area, but with the
wind blowing in the right direction, and
nothing standing in the way of the fire, it
spreads so fast.”
