Thanksgiving is a time for gathering
the family, but how do you keep kids
interested while in the car or sitting
in airports? Have them keep jour-
nals.
THANKSGIVING TRAVEL
Nothing beats getting your extended
family together for Thanksgiving. It
is a great time to catch up and laugh
about old times. The only aggravat-
ing thing, of course, is actually trav-
eling to meet up. There are already
stories of travel nightmares in the
news two days be-
fore Thanksgiving.
This can be particu-
larly troubling if you
have kids who be-
come easily bored.
In these days of the
Internet and video
games, the average
child seems to have
an attention span of about 30 sec-
onds. If a glassy-eyed child killing
things on a screen is not your idea of
good thing, what alternatives do you
have? Giving your child a writing
journal is a great way to keep them
busy without resorting to violent
video games.
For many kids, the only way to truly
get their attention on a Thanksgiving
trip is to get them involved. The best
method for doing this is to give them
a journal and ask them to keep notes
on everything they see. At the end of
the day, they should be encouraged
to write a journal entry about what
happened during the day. It will give
them an outlet for their thoughts,
promote good writing skills and pre-
serve family experiences they would
otherwise forget with time.
A good journal for kids will combine
a number of characteristics. First, it
should be compact. Second, it should
have a case to protect it from rain,
spills and just because kids will be
kids. Third, the journal should con-
tain blank areas for notes, doodles
and so on. Finally, the journal should
contain cue spaces to remind chil-
dren to pay attention to certain
things and write them down.
Cues should include:
1. Who went on the family vaca-
tion,
2. Places visited and why they are
important,
3. The most memorable experi-
ence each day,
4. New friends made and contact
information for them,
5. Which family members were pre-
sent, and
6. Impressions.
As time passes, the family vacations
journals will remind your kids of
past trips. Memories fade with time,
even for kids. By keeping a journal,
kids will open their eyes to things
around them, enhancing your
Thanksgiving family gathering.
Hopefully, it will also keep them
busy and away from video games, at
least for some of the time.

Tips to Take Great
Holiday Pictures

You don’t want the same picture
that you took last year, and you
want it to look different than
Uncle Joe’s picture when he is
standing right next to you. Here
are some ideas to help you take
great pictures this holiday that
everyone in the family will be
able to cherish and remember.
1. Use high resolution.
For photos that you do not
want to print, low resolution
is great! But if you are taking
a picture that
you are going
to want to print
out for your al-
bum or scrap-
book, or to give
as a gift to your
mother for her
upcoming
birthday, you
will get a better
printed image
with a higher
resolution. If
you need to
buy an extra memory card so
that you have the storage
room, splurge on yourself
and buy one.
2: Get close up.
Create impact by getting up
close. The picture will look to-
tally different with your subject
up close and personal than it will
with them just fitting into the
background.
3. Don’t use the “Auto” set-
ting.
Take control of your camera and
your pictures. Doing it manually
you are likely to get different
and more interesting shots. For
portraits, use low aperture –
around 2.8. For landscapes, use
high aperture – around 16. Don’t
be afraid to experiment.
4. Change your angle.
Don’t just stand in front of your
subject. Try kneeling down in
front of your subject, laying
down and taking the picture
from the ground, or standing up
high on a chair or on a second
floor balcony.
Have your fam-
ily stand on the
stairs and take
pictures from the
side as well as
the bottom of the
stairs.
5. Don’t center
your picture.
There is no rule
that your friend
or family member have to be in
the center of the picture. You
can get a great picture by an-
gling it so that your subject is to
the left or right side. You can
have him sit on top of a sturdy
table and take the picture so that
the table is included and your
subject is just in the top frame of
the picture. Play around, experi-
ment and have fun!

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a
holiday for giving thanks and spend-
ing time with friends and family. Add
to that all of the wonderful food and
it’s easy to see why Thanksgiving is
one of the most popular holidays.
Unfortunately, if
you’re the one host-
ing a Thanksgiving
dinner, all of the
preparations can be
very stressful. Well,
not anymore! The
reality is most of us
already know how to
plan the perfect
Thanksgiving, all it
takes is a little extra preparation.
Just follow these five easy steps and
your holiday stress will be a thing of
the past:
Step 1 – Several weeks before
Thanksgiving, start planning your
menu. You’ll need to decide what
kind of turkey or other meat you’re
going to have (grilled, deep fried or
baked) and you will also want to shop
for any items you can get in advance,
like rolls, pie mixes, frozen goods,
etc. It’s also a good idea to put up
your outside decorations and start
thinking about how you’re going to
decorate inside. Finally, cook double
sized meals now and freeze them so
that you don’t have to worry about
cooking family meals the week of
Thanksgiving.
Step 2 – The weekend before
Thanksgiving, go ahead and do any
major cleaning that you will need to
do, especially if you will be having
guests staying overnight. Double
check your menu and go shopping for
any items you haven’t gotten yet. If
anyone asks what they can bring, it’s
usually best to ask for desserts or fin-
ger food since they’re easy to trans-
port. You’ll also want to prep your
kitchen by removing any unnecessary
clutter since you will need all the
counter space you can get.
Step 3 – A few days before Thanks-
giving, check your menu again and
make sure you aren’t missing any vi-
tal ingredients. You should also go
ahead and make anything that can be
done ahead of time such as
pies or dips for veggie
trays. It’s also a good idea
to prep your fresh produce
by chopping and bagging
them. You can also do this
with casserole ingredients
sothat on Thanksgiving all
the prep work is done.
Step 4 — The day before
Thanksgiving, go ahead and make the
mashed potatoes and put together any
veggie trays if you are having any.
It’s also a good idea to set the table,
so that you aren’t scrambling to do
this at the last minute. Set out all of
your plates, wine glasses, silverware,
placemats and napkins.
Step 5 – On Thanksgiving Day,
spend some time in the morning put-
ting together any casseroles you
prepped for earlier. You also want to
be sure to allow plenty of time for
cooking the main course since it will
take the longest. Plan for the meat to
finish cooking roughly an hour before
you intend to serve the meal, that way
if it takes longer than expected you
still have plenty of time.
That’s it! It may seem like planning
and preparing the perfect Thanksgiv-
ing dinner is stressful and over-
whelming, but it really isn’t. With a
little smart planning, you can break
down all of the preparation into man-
ageable pieces so that your Thanks-
giving dinner this year goes off with-
