Racism is the unjust hate for any people who are simply different for a various array of reasons. It
is all around us and always will be, but that does not give us the right to be passive on the subject.
This discrimination against culturally diverse people is hurting our " land of the free", one racist
remark at a time.
So what is racism? According to the Webster's New World Dictionary, racism is: the practice of racial
discrimination, segregation, etc. Racism anti semitism against a certain race, religion, or group of
people. A huge example of this is the Jewish Holocaust. From 1939–1945 the Jewish population was
scapegoated for all of Germany's problems after World War l, resulting in the death of 6 million
Jews. This is why racism has to stop, so history doesn't repeat itself. Another huge factor to why
racism exists is because of the fact that people make general, uneducated assumptions about
different racial groups, the first steps to prejudice. Besides, America is a free and independent
nation. The Pledge of Allegiance, a part of an American's daily life clearly states: "...with liberty
and justice for all." How can you pledge your full allegiance to America everyday and then ignore

always been a big topic in society, even during Jesus Christ time. I believe racism comes from
independent thinking and views and how this view from family, friends and society forms us

The guy uncle was a war veteran and he was constantly harassed by the young Puerto Rican kids in
the neighborhood until they saw he was crazy and did not care if he had to take one of them out. I
had another Italian–Irish friend and he told me in his block they would try to mess with him and
some people would call him racial slurs while growing up in the Fordham section of the Bronx
and he had to earn his respect. I worked as a paper boy and every time I was distributing paper
there would be some Black folks and some young guys and the young guys would look at me and

Often times these people feel that just because a person is a certain color or race, that they must
be a thief or a criminal. This is very typical in today's society and no one deserves to be prejudged

don't even know that they are doing it, often thinking that it is just normal behavior. There are
people that don't realize that they are racist and then there are those people who are ignorant and

Racism is like an epidemic in that it is spread by communities and affects thousands of lives every
day. It is shown through speech and actions from the age range of children to elders. When in
effect, racism can become violent and flip lives upside down. Fast forward past all the civil rights
movements and efforts to halt racism, and today's society still has an abundance of racism.
Eradicating racism all together has been the goal since the beginning of time, but I believe to make
people aware of actual damage it causes is the best way to advocate how wrong this discrimination
is. One of the most impactful program I have seen to spread awareness of racism is the television hit
series titled "Switched at Birth". During the specific episode, a select group of white students placed
cotton balls throughout the lawn of the Black Student Union. Since these said students were white
and rich, they got away with it. This lack of punishment from authority for such a horrendous act
created an uprising within the Union. Not only did they peacefully protest, but one member went on
a hunger strike to gain attention. The school refused to partake in the expulsion of the students and
requests of equality from the union, so the one member continued her hunger strike. Soon after this
refusal of acknowledgment, the said member was sent to the hospital as she had passed out and
almost lost her life. Even after this event, the school wanted to ignore her actions and keep the

The concept of race and racism has transformed over time and is seen through the eyes of
everyone in our world. It unfortunately seems to be the norm for the public to not only assume
an individual 's race and to separate them to be distant from one another, but to also pigeon hole

I am writing this letter to discuss the debated topic of racism. In our class we have used many
resources to help us understand racism in greater depth. Using these resources, and my own personal
opinion I would like to share problems with racism and potential solutions to reduce racism.
Firstly, racism to me is discriminating against someone else due to their race or religion. As an
international student I have had the opportunity to witness first–hand the cultural differences
between my home country of England and the United States of America. In England, there are many
different populations of people of various ethnicity and religion. I believe the most popular form of
racism in England does not depend on skin color. Many English people are black and many are
white. The type of racism I witnessed while in England was based upon religion. In particular,
Muslims immigrating from Asia. Many uneducated people stereotype terrorism as a product of the
Islam religion and therefore believe that all Muslims are terrorists. Fortunately, I fully understand the
separation between religion and terrorism.
