3. Low productivity
“Total factor productivity, which captures the
overall efficiency of production, has declined
at an average rate of 2.1 per cent every year
over the period 1990 to 2010. Similarly, labour
productivity, which measures output per
worker, contracted at an average rate of 0.5
per cent per year over the same period”
"Against this background, Jamaica’s annual
economic growth over the past decade has
averaged 0.8 per cent. This is in contrast to
average economic growth of 2.6 per cent per
year for our Caribbean neighbours"
26. Capturing
Are you using your memory? Do you
have many or few capture points?

27. Potential Capture Points
Automatic Manual
• email inboxes (personal / • mental memory
work / private, etc.) • paper pad
• voice-mail box • digital voice-recorder
• postal mail-box • post-it’s / bits of paper /
• paper inbox palm of hand
• Twitter • cell phone / pda /
• Facebook / social smartphone
networking • software (Outlook,
• Beeper / text messages OneNote etc.)
• notes passed to you on
paper

28. Component #1 - Capturing
Novices / Rely on memory, random bits of paper. May use
White Belts many Inboxes / Voice mailboxes
Yellow Belts Still using some memory, but now have specifically
chosen paper to capture with, plus a manageable
number of Inboxes / Voice mailboxes
Orange Belts Very little memory, plus paper that is part of a set of
pads. There is some consolidation of inboxes. A
capture point is often, but not always available
Green Belts Never rely on memory, and use reliable capture
points all the time. A manual capture point is always
available, and the number is kept to a minimum. A
backup capture point is used in emergencies.

35. Fill the gap
• Not by buying a Blackberry!!!
• Changing habits
• Not all at once, but using a multi-month plan
• It takes time to learn/un-learn old habits
At the same time, there is more and more new technology available.
Yet, we are stuck with the old habits we inherited, even as we try to add new technology on top of them.
The result is chaos, which is the product of adding new technology to old habits
The chaos is manifested in habits like texting while driving, which some 90% of us who own smartphones say we have done. It’s 23 x more dangerous than regular driving.
80% of us say we use smartphone in meetings to check other stuff that’s happening
We have become a rude set of people…
And also unhygienic. Never borrow a smartphone if you can help it…
