“Building up all people in Christ for service and witness in the world.”
Happy
Thanksgiving!
Camp Luther has so much to be thankful for!
We give thanks for the thousands of people
who came to camp this year, for the staff and
volunteers who gave of themselves, and for
you! It is you, the people of Camp Luther,
filled with the love of Jesus, who make all this
possible. Without your donations of
finances, time, and prayers, Camp Luther
would not exist.
Above all, we give thanks to God, who gave
His only Son to rescue and redeem us from
our sin. It is because of God’s love that Camp
Luther has a message of hope and love to
share!
We pray that your holiday season is filled
with joy and health!

ANCHORED: Summer 2017 Recap
For we have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. – Hebrews 6:19
This summer at Camp Luther and Keweenaw Base Camp, thousands of
campers got to experience the theme “Anchored” lived out in their own lives.
Campers, guests, and families were reminded of the hope we have in Jesus
Christ. They learned that in Jesus, we have a hope that rescues us, a hope
that we can trust in, and a hope that we know is true and living. They left
Camp Luther knowing that Jesus loves them tremendously, that He is
stronger than any earthly anchor, and that He will hold them through the
storms of life.
While it’s impossible to measure how many lives were impacted by the Holy
Spirit this summer, we can measure some things!
At Camp Luther…
Over 1,500 children and youth attended overnight camps at Camp Luther!
275 first-time campers were sent to Camp Luther through the Every Kid to Camp program!
Over 20 kids participated in the second year of a local day camp program at Camp Luther.
6 medical professionals served as Guest Medics, caring for campers and staff.
9 Pastors served as Pastor of the Week, sharing the Word and answering questions.
45 college-aged Summer Staff grew together in faith, service, leadership, and community!
At Keweenaw Base Camp…
136 people participated in 8 different servant teams!
14 high schoolers experienced adventure and challenge as part of The Edge.
5 high schoolers participated in the first ever Venture program, taking adventure to the next level.
57 people came to KBC as part of 5 different group programs focused on adventure and team building activities!
6 unique organizations were helped through servant events, including: Keweenaw Base Camp, Keweenaw Land Trust,
Saints Peter & Paul Lutheran Church, Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly, The Lighthouse of Hancock, and Bob & Bev.
A new, second tent village was built to accommodate rising attendance at KBC!
Each of Camp Luther’s eight IMPACT sessions traveled to KBC for a two-night off-site camping trip.
Off-Site…
13 church congregations and communities throughout Wisconsin were served through our Congregational Day Camp
program.
Over 470 children attendeda Congregational Day Camp program!
Thank you to the Guest Pastors, Guest Medics, RV Volunteers, Kitchen Volunteers, and countless others who made
Summer 2017 an outstanding success. All glory to God!

2017 Volunteers of the Year!
Congratulations to the men of Mt. Olive Lutheran Men’s Ministry, Camp Luther’s 2017
Volunteers of the Year! Mt. Olive Lutheran is located in Weston, WI.
The group meets each Monday evening for Bible
Study and fellowship at Mt. Olive. Their study of
God’s Word has led them to put their faith into
action, serving the needs of their congregation,
community, and Camp Luther.
Over the last four years these gentlemen have
blessed Camp Luther by volunteering each spring
and fall. As true servants they are always willing
to take on some of the coldest, dirtiest,
dangerous, and most difficult projects. They have
also championed the annual firewood project,
cutting and hauling in dozens of dead and downed trees from the camp property so hundreds
of campfires are possible each summer at Camp Luther.
Thank you, Men of Mt. Olive. Your service and sacrifice is a witness to your faith and love for
the Lord and inspires others to do the same.
Filled with the Spirit
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of
God boldly. Acts 4:31b
Our campaign theme, Filled with the
Spirit, is much more than a slogan. It
cuts deep to our purpose as a ministry
and reminds us that God, through the
power of the Holy Spirit, is at work at
camp.
During my high school years as a Junior
Counselor, I was so excited about camp
that a friend and I visited other churches
in our circuit to share information and
get others involved. An old camp song called “He is Here” played
along with that filmstrip presentation (Yes filmstrip!) and has stuck
with me all these years.
“He is here, He is here, He is moving among us.
He is here, He is here, as we gather in His name.”
Jesus promised to be with us when we gather in His name. Camp is
that gathering place for thousands of children, adults, and families.
People come to camp at many different stages of life and faith
journeys, but all gather under the name of Jesus. And here in this
place, the Holy Spirit works through the power of the Gospel and
the fellowship of other believers.
People are truly transformed through this ministry. Every visitor to
camp brings their own set of burdens. From the Kindercamper to
the grandparent, we all experience the effects of sin and the work
of the devil in our lives. Camp brings new hope and joy to
thousands of people as they are built up and encouraged through
the Gospel. And like those disciples in our theme verse, they are
filled with the Holy Spirit and return to their homes, schools, and
work places with the courage to boldly share God’s Word.
I invite you, your family, and your congregation, to learn more
about this important campaign for Camp Luther. Through your
prayers and financial support, you can bring hope and
encouragement to others through the power of the Holy Spirit.

What’s New at KBC?
Keweenaw Base Camp continues to grow and expand! During summer 2017, some
exciting enhancements were made:
New Tent Village
“The Pines Village was a huge plus this year and one
of my favorite additions,” Marcus Huff, Base Camp
Director. “It is nestled off the path and is surrounded
by tall, beautiful pines. We were able to utilize the
tents during wet days as well as an excellent location
for groups to spread out and do their own things.”
Expanded Trails
Trails throughout the property were expanded. Guests can now stroll through the
rolling hills, over creeks, and take in views that make anyone really feel a part of God’s
country.
Paddleboards
Groups loved the addition of paddleboards to
the waterfront.
ExpandedBeach
To accommodate the growing number of
groups using KBC and the growing
watercraft, the sand beach was extended.
Landscaping Equipment, Tools, andSupplies
KBC provides an abundance of servant events. These new supplies will help groups
working at KBC better serve the community.
2017 was an exciting year for improving and adding to existing features. Even more
exciting additions are planned for 2018.

Summer 2017 Recap
Youth and adults from across the country joined together at Keweenaw Base Camp
near Houghton, MI, to grow in faith and uncover new talents, strengths, and passions.
They were able to impact each other as well as the community in so many ways. It was
exciting to see the growth from 9 groups in 2016 to 19 in 2017. Over 250 campers
made up of youth, counselors, teachers, pastors, and adults came to KBC from
Pennsylvania, Texas, Illinois, Minnesota,
Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Programs included
The Edge, Venture, Limitless, Servant, and a few
customized programs as well.
KBC offers a variety of service options for groups
to experience both onsite and in the community.
Some days were spent as a team and other days
several different groups worked together. Events
included: wood chipping the prayer trail at Saints
Peter and Paul Lutheran Church; wood chopping,
stacking, and delivering with Little Brothers, Friends of
the Elderly; landscaping with the Keweenaw Land Trust
at Marsin Nature Retreat Center; painting, landscaping,
garden restoration, and visiting with the seniors at The
Lighthouse of Hancock; and yard work, deck demo, and
staining at a home in the community. Many of the
groups got to be a part of trailblazing, trenching, and
beach extension onsite at KBC.
“It is amazing watching someone go outside of their
comfort zone and find inner talents, strengths, overcome fears,
and grow in their faith,” Janette Marien, Community Outreach
Coordinator. Taking groups on excursions that may include sea
kayaking on Lake Superior, mountain biking, touring the
Adventure Mine, or ziplining at Michigan Tech for the first time
provide an environment for this to happen.
KBC’s adventures and excursions in Houghton and the
surrounding areas offer so many wonderful waterfalls, hiking
trails, bluffs, and
breathtaking views of
Lake Superior.
Christian growth is the
core of who we are and what we offer at
KBC. “KBC continues to touch the hearts of
everyone that visits,” said Marcus Huff,
Base Camp Director. “We have a beautiful
camp, and it’s exciting to see all the
possibilities with it too.” We are excited to
be planning for new additions to camp for
next summer! Follow Keweenaw Base
Camp on Facebook to stay up to date.

IRA Rollover Charitable
Opportunities
Have you considered giving to Camp Luther through your IRA?
In December of 2015, Congress passed the Path Act which made the IRA
rollover to charities permanent! Donors over age 70½ may now plan each
year to make transfers directly from an IRA to a charity.
It is quite common for IRA owners to take a
single distribution of their RMD (required
minimum distribution) in the fourth
quarter (October thru December). Have
you considered making a charitable gift
using your RMD? If you do not need the
income, by choosing a charity you could
significantly reduce your adjusted gross
income and make your tax returns less
complicated.
You can also support Camp Luther while getting a head start on your year-
end tax planning with these options:
Outright Gift of an Asset
Donor Advised Fund (DAF)
Zero-Tax Gift and Sale

Camp Luther’s Filled with the Spirit Campaign is a $5 million, five year,
comprehensive campaign supporting the Outdoor Ministry Fund, Every
Kid to Camp, and Capital Improvement Projects.
Campaign Goals & Progress
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and spoke the word of God boldly.
-Acts 4:31b
This is a wonderful time to reflect on the blessings of this past year. For many,
this is when they turn their eyes to what is most important, giving thanks and
praise to the One who provides everything to each of us. We have a renewed
sense of hope and faith as we give thanks to God!
Therefore, since we are receiving a
kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be
thankful, and so worship God acceptably
with reverence and awe, for our “God is a
consuming fire.” ~Hebrews 12:28-29
It truly has been exciting to see how the
Lord has and continues to work through
His people at Camp Luther and our
future. Over the last few years the Camp Luther Board of Directors, North
Wisconsin District, and leadership have reviewed our mission, clarified our core
values, and created a vision for our future. They have also listened intently to
our faithful supporters, during which time they have assessed the financial and
physical condition of Camp. They have embraced the challenges before us and
are planning for a bright and sustainable future for Camp Luther. Several areas
were initially researched and explored; first from a priority basis and then from a
cost basis. The results of that study revealed the following necessities:
1.To start a Capital Campaign to raise funds for our building projects as well as
our operational and program funds. Our Filled with the Spirit Campaign started
in 2014 and seeks to raise $5 million over five years to build our annual support
base and grow our Capital Improvements fund. This began with the completion
of the Lower Level of the Retreat Center, which was completed this summer
and the construction of a greatly needed Community Center containing a new
kitchen and expanded dining area.
2.To create plans to educate people about the needs of Camp along with raising
monies for the Outdoor Ministry Fund and the Every Kid to Camp Program.
We began this process by approaching individuals and corporations in our
Leadership Phase and then moved into the Cottage Family Phase. Most of these
families have been a part of the programs of Camp for over 40 years, returning
to Camp every summer to be refreshed and renewed. We kicked off our Alumni
Phase with a reunion in the summer of 2016 and continue to reach out to over
500 alumni staff members. Most recently, Camp has been working with many
volunteers in moving towards the Congregational Phase where congregations
of the North Wisconsin District will be able to
choose how they want to participate in the
Campaign. The official kickoff for this phase
begins in January 2018. Camp is pleased to
announce that Redeemer Marquette has
started Camp off with a commitment of
$100,000 towards the Campaign!
We continue to speak with individuals, corporations, and foundations for
support of the Campaign as well in the Special Gifts Phase along with moving
into the Public Phase of the Campaign. Together, through God’s grace, we are
confident we can reach the goals we have set for this effort.

In between adventures you’ll make lasting
friendships, build your faith, and have a blast
hanging out at KBC.
The Edge is a great choice if this is your first time attending KBC and you want
to see what the excitement is all about!
Venture (9th
-12th
grade)
Take your adventure to the next level! Venture is our
intermediate adventure-based program at KBC. The
focus of Venture is a two-night overnight adventure
trip centered around a specific adventure skill. This
summer our first Venture session will be focused on
wilderness survival skills (Venture: Survive), and our
second Venture session will be focused on
backpacking skills (Venture: Hike). Venture also
includes all the awesome community building, faith
formation, memory making, and fun that you’ve come
to expect at KBC!
Venture is a great choice if you’ve already been to KBC
and want a new adventure or if you’d like to experience an overnight adventure
trip!
IGNITE (9th-
12th
grade)
Have you done IMPACT? IGNITE is our second-year IMPACT program, designed
to take past IMPACT campers even deeper in their faith and leadership. Using
the setting of KBC, you’ll be involved in reaching out to the local Keweenaw
community through mission and
service and using those experiences
to build your faith and grow in your
ability to follow Jesus Christ—
wherever He leads. IGNITE also
includes the close-knit community,
amazing counselors, memorable
experiences, and intentional faith
building in an 8-day program that you
first experienced in IMPACT.
IGNITE is a great choice if you’ve already done IMPACT at Camp Luther and are
looking for the next step to continue to grow in your leadership and your faith!
Where do I drop off and pick up my camper for these programs?
Drop-off and pick-up for each of these programs will be at Camp Luther.
Campers will meet at Camp Luther on registration day and then head up to KBC
for the week, returning on Friday to be picked up at Camp Luther.
A Look Out at the Newly Revived Lookout Point
Lookout Point is an awesome spot at Camp Luther
that typically hasn’t received a lot of visitors. It’s the
highest point on camp and requires a pretty good
trek through the woods, down and up (and up and
up) hills to reach. When you get to the top, the view
isn’t what it used to be, as over the years the trees
have grown up and obscured the view. But if you
look closely you can still catch a glimpse of Planting
Ground Lake in the distance.
This summer, the campers and staff who were a part
of Camp Luther’s IMPACT program helped to create
Hammock Village at Lookout Point. Their whole-
hearted service and hard work over the course of
eight weeks resulted in the revitalization of a part of
Camp Luther that has fallen into disuse over the
years and helped create a special place that will be
enjoyed by many for years to come!
Steps to Creating a Hammock Village:
1. Clear away all the brush, branches, and charred
firewood that has built up in the Lookout Point
clearing.
2. Dig out a large firepit, including going on a
scavenger hunt for BIG rocks to build a fire ring.
3. Build six solid wood benches and then dig a
bunch of holes in a circle around the firepit to
install those benches. Make sure to fill back in
the dirt and tramp it down!
4. Install a solid steel fire ring into the firepit.
5. Build a firewood rack (with roof!) and install it on
the edge of the clearing.
6. Clear away more brush and sticks to create
plenty of open spots to hang hammocks.
7. Move a (heavy) picnic table from the
maintenance shed all the way up the hill to
Lookout Point!
8. You’re almost done. Just add hammocks!
IMPACT (8th
-10th
grade) is an incredible eight-day
program focused on leadership and service. If you’re
a teenager looking to make a difference, grow as a
leader, build your faith, and create life-long
Friendships, then check out IMPACT this summer!
Step 7: Move a (heavy!) picnic tableStep 3: Build and install benches

Retreat Center Lower Level Completed & Dedicated
Thanks to generous donors, the Lower Level of the Retreat Center was completed this summer! The Lower Level was the first
phase of Camp Luther’s Filled with the Spirit Campaign. The sixadditional rooms housed Program Coordinators and Guest
Medics this summer and will allow for more guest housing throughout the year.
Labor Day Weekend, on September 3rd
, Camp Luther celebrated and dedicated the Lower Level of the Retreat Center. Rev.
Dwayne Lueck, President of the North Wisconsin District LCMS, gave the sermon and then led the participants through the
building down the stairs and out to the channel where the dedication took place. It was a beautiful sunny day for this blessed
event!
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. ~Psalm 107:1

Office Wall Repair
Last spring, it was discovered that the back wall of Camp’s
offices below the Arts and Crafts Room was constructed
over an old garbage dump, causing the footings to drop and
creating large gaps in the concrete wall. This fall the back
wall of the offices was taken out, the footings were
re-poured, and the wall was rebuilt.
Lakeview Remodel Completed
Camp Luther continues to upgrade cottages for you! This past winter and spring, Rescue,
Camp Luther’s Maintenance & ImprovementsDirector, and volunteers completely renovated
Lakeview Cottage. The new open-concept , car siding, and tile floor were ready for the first
week of Family Camp. Guests can now enjoy views of Range Line Lake from the kitchen,
dining, and living rooms. Lakeview also has an island countertop and gas fireplace.
Before: Lakeview's walls obstructed the view of the lake and made
the cottage dark.
After: Range Line Lake can be seen from the
entire main living space
Blackbird Cottage Is Next
Camp Luther plans to continue upgrading cottages for
guests. This winter, Blackbird Cottage will undergo extensive
remodeling. Thank you for your continued support of Camp
