3. HISTORY
• Motorola started in Chicago, Illinois as Galvin
Manufacturing Corporation in 1928, with its first
product being a battery eliminator. Company
founder Paul V. Galvin created the brand name
Motorola for the car radio—linking "motor" (for
motorcar) with "ola" (which implied sound). Thus
the Motorola brand meant sound in motion. The
name Motorola was adopted in 1930, and the word
has been used as a trademark since the 1930s.

• IN1930s
Motorola began developing two-way radio communications
equipment and Motorola was the first company to
introduce the car radio that were used for mainly public
safety officers.
• IN1940s
Motorola developed the world’s first handheld radio, the
Handie-Talkie portable two-way radio, designed for the U.S.
military. More two-way radios for public safety and for
businesses.

first "car phone" - Motorola communications equipment carried
the first calls on Illinois Bell Telephone Company's new car
radiotelephone service in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

After 10 years and more than a US$100 million
investment, Motorola received type acceptance for and
created the world's first portable cellular phone system
and world's first handheld cell phone, the DynaTAC
8000X and that’s changed the life around the world.

prototype digital cellular system and phones
using GSM standard in Hanover, Germany.

Motorola introduced the world's first commercial
digital radio system that combined paging, data and
cellular communications and voice dispatch in a single

pager which allowed users to receive text messages

Motorola by the help of Cisco supplied the world's
first commercial GPRS cellular network to BT-
Cellnet in the United Kingdom. The world's first
GPRS cell phone was also developed by Motorola.
• IN 2002s
Motorola introduced the world's first wireless cable
modem gateway which combined a high-speed
cable modem router with an ethernet switch and
wireless home gateway.
