It was built in the 19thCentury instead of a previous church; it was designed by a Maltese Architect Giorgio Grognet de Vassé. The dome is among the largest in the world and has an internal diameter of 37.2 meters and the walls are almost 9.1 meters thick. The design was based on the pantheon in Rome, its construction began in May 1833 and was constructed in the 1860’s.The old church was left standing in those days so people still had a place to worship and was consecrated in October 15th 1871. On April 9th 1942 during an afternoon Air-raid, three Luftwaffe bombs fell on the church; one pierced the Dome whilst the other the two bounced off, the bombs did not explode on the 300 people who where waiting for an early evening mass. The Bombs replica is now found inside the Mosta Dome under the words “The bomb miracle.” <br />
