2. The Coral Reef
Coral reef protection is a
process of maintaining
healthy coral reefs. Two types
of stressors are associated
with reef systems: the natural
and human-induced. The
effects of these stressors can
range from negligible to
catastrophic. Coral reefs are
located in tropical oceans
near the equator. The largest
coral reef is the Great Barrier
Reef in Australia. And the
second largest Coral Reef can
be found off the coast of
Belize in Central America.

are also in Scotland. In the cold waters they have
nice hard skeletons.
Why are they important?
Cold-water coral reefs form oases of food and
shelter on the seabed, and are thought to be
breeding grounds and refuges for man.y fish
4. What lives in a Coral Reef
• Millions of species live in and around coral
reefs. Coral reefs are home to millions of
species. Hidden beneath the ocean waters,
coral reefs teem with life. Fish, corals, lobsters,
clams, seahorses, sponges, and sea turtles are
only a few of the thousands of creatures that
rely on reefs for their survival.
