This document discusses making course material culturally relevant and sensitive to students. It suggests adapting material that may be culturally insensitive so that it is set in a social context to increase student interest and understanding. The document also recommends using a student-centered teaching style rather than heavy "teacher talk". One strategy proposed is a "fishbowl" interactive speaking activity where a small group of students discuss a topic inside a central circle while other students on the outside can tap in to replace them, making participation more inclusive.

5. “FISHBOWL” INTERACTIVE
SPEAKING ACTIVITY
• A few students arrange their seat in a circle
(centre circle). Around them the remainder of
the students also form an outer circle. The
centre circle discusses a topic. Students from
the outer circle are given the option to ‘tap out’
those in the “Fishbowl” in order to exchange
places. This is an excellent technique if you find
that in more general discussion one or two
students tend to dominate the proceedings.
