This document provides an overview of the Dominican Republic. It notes that the country has an area of 48,000 km2 and a population of around 10.2 million people. The economy has traditionally depended on mining, tourism, and agriculture as major products and services. Two criteria are used to allocate countries into stages of
development. The first is the level of GDP per capita at
market exchange rates. This widely available measure
is used as a proxy for wages, because internationally
