Every project needs a proposal and every proposal needs a project
The proposal needs to be well ordered and provide a clear outline of the project
The proposal must be a working document which can be presented to people outside of the project and used by people working within the project
Just two major examples of how the proposal will be used. It is important to make sure any proposal is practical for what it will be used for.
The proposal does not stand alone, it is intrinsically incorporated in to the rest of the project, from the planning stage to the evaluation stage
Proposal writing forms part of the communication stage of this wheel, however it can be seen how a proposal is required at every stage.
For fundraising it is vital to present a clear and practical document which will make donors seriously consider your application
The proposal should be something which is referred to constantly during implementation. Although what is written is flexible, it needs to be a good base from which to work
Evaluation of a project begins in the proposal. Clear methods and aims of evaluation need to be considered in a project proposal
You need to briefly introduce yourself and give a quick overview of the project as a whole
Summarises the whole project in an easily read form
What exactly is the problem you are trying to address. You will want to refer to some surveys or research in to the situation.
How are you going to resolve the problem that you are trying to tackle? Try to get the balance between being original big plans and being realistic; don’t try and save the whole world in an afternoon, give it a couple of days!
These are your measurable outcomes of success and failure. They should be quantitative where possible and cover all parts of your proposed strategy. It is important to understand the difference between aims, goals and objectives.
This is how you measure your aims, goals and objectives. It should be as simple as possible, but provide a good way to assess your success or failure.
A way to assess if the project is succesful
Money is key to any sponsorship bid. This section needs to be fully comprehensive and well researched, giving best estimates where exact figures are not available.
This may include surveys and assessments you have carried out, reports or other information you have used in your project
Finding the right materials or consultants to help yourself to clear up the characteristics of your project that you should put in your proposal.
A proposal needs to be written, reread and written again as many times as is practical so that the final product is the best possible.
However, timing is an important consideration, especially with regards to fundraising.
In the IFMSA you will often be working with people who you do not know very well and who probably live in a different country. You must be clear on how you will coordinate the proposal writing. Do not write the whole project yourself, it will not reflect the group views! Easier said than done…..
Good English (or any other language!) is very important, especially when presenting to a source of funds. Stick to either American or British English, do not use both!
