THE HITCH-HIKER
BY ROALD DAHL.
AUTHOR’S BIOGRAPHY.
 ROADL DAHL(1916-1990).
 Born on September 13, 1916, in Llandaff,
South Wales, to Norwegian parents, Harald
and Sofie (Hesselberg) Dahl.
 Graduated from Repton School in 1933
 After graduation he went to work for the Shell
Oil Company of East Africa, served in the Royal
Air Force as a fighter pilot and he became a
Wing Commander.
 He was married to actress Patricia Neal, on
July 2, 1953 .
 His career started when he was inspired by
meeting with C.S. Forester with his article
‘A piece of cake’ which was published in the
‘The Saturday Evening Post’.
 In 1943 Dahl wrote his first children's book,
The Gremlins. Eleanor Roosevelt read it to
her grandchildren and liked it so much that
she invited him to have dinner with her and
the President at the White House.
 Dahl is widely known for his stories and
poems mostly for the children including :
Charlie and the chocolate factory (1964),
The BFG (1982), Revolting rhymes (1982).

Text Analysis
 Hitch-hiker: a person
travelling to get free
rides in other people’s
cars by standing at
the side of the road
and signalling to
drivers.
Characteristics of the narrator
 The story is written in a dialogue form where
writer presents himself as a narrator who gives
lift to the hitch-hiker.
 The narrator is very much interested in genuine
engines.
 The narrator is very kind hearted as he gives lift
to the hitch-hiker.
 He is very much conscious towards his
passengers.
 He is not clever and is careless in
comparison to the hitch-hiker.
 He is not up to dated about the current
affairs.
 He is not tactical.

 He is a good face reader.
 He is very clever.
 He is logical and tactful mind.
 He is aplomb.
 He takes pride of his job.
 He is up to dated about the current
affairs.
Critical Thoughts
 Comparison and contrasting between
hitch-hiker and narrator.
 From their own view they are goodskilled
in their own view or prospective.
 Hitch-hiker is very confident.
 Writer is not confident enough as a
successful writer should be.
 His mind is very logical and tactful.
 Hitch-hiker is better than the narrator.

The hitch hiker

  • 2. AUTHOR’S BIOGRAPHY.  ROADL DAHL(1916-1990).  Born on September 13, 1916, in Llandaff, South Wales, to Norwegian parents, Harald and Sofie (Hesselberg) Dahl.  Graduated from Repton School in 1933  After graduation he went to work for the Shell Oil Company of East Africa, served in the Royal Air Force as a fighter pilot and he became a Wing Commander.  He was married to actress Patricia Neal, on July 2, 1953 .
  • 3.  His career started when he was inspired by meeting with C.S. Forester with his article ‘A piece of cake’ which was published in the ‘The Saturday Evening Post’.  In 1943 Dahl wrote his first children's book, The Gremlins. Eleanor Roosevelt read it to her grandchildren and liked it so much that she invited him to have dinner with her and the President at the White House.  Dahl is widely known for his stories and poems mostly for the children including : Charlie and the chocolate factory (1964), The BFG (1982), Revolting rhymes (1982).

  • 7. Text Analysis  Hitch-hiker: a person travelling to get free rides in other people’s cars by standing at the side of the road and signalling to drivers.
  • 8. Characteristics of the narrator  The story is written in a dialogue form where writer presents himself as a narrator who gives lift to the hitch-hiker.  The narrator is very much interested in genuine engines.  The narrator is very kind hearted as he gives lift to the hitch-hiker.
  • 9.  He is very much conscious towards his passengers.  He is not clever and is careless in comparison to the hitch-hiker.  He is not up to dated about the current affairs.  He is not tactical.
  • 10. Characteristics of Hitch-Hiker  He is a good face reader.  He is very clever.  He is logical and tactful mind.  He is aplomb.  He takes pride of his job.  He is up to dated about the current affairs.

Critical Thoughts  Comparison and contrasting between hitch-hiker and narrator.  From their own view they are goodskilled in their own view or prospective.  Hitch-hiker is very confident.  Writer is not confident enough as a successful writer should be.  His mind is very logical and tactful.  Hitch-hiker is better than the narrator.
