The activities are designed to:
• Increase social, civic and economic participation through provision of skills and support
leading to improved connection to community;
• Improve community interest and capacity to own & respond to early childhood issues, and
issues that relate to families and communities;
• Community members, its facilities and institutions work together to improve early childhood
and children’s health, development and well-being
Program Overview
The Community and Business Coordination Forum Activity has been developed to
coordinate and capacity build community organisations and businesses to more effectively
work in partnership and use available time, talent and dollars towards the sustainability of
activities and other community services.
On the 15th June a half day Community and Business Partnership Forum will be run for
community organisations and businesses. The focus of the Forum is to bring together
community organisations and local businesses to highlight the mutual benefits of community
and business partnerships and provide an opportunity for networking between the two
groups.
The program will cover:
- Community-business partnership ideas
- Community engagement
- Social Entrepreneurship
- What’s in it for me?
- Case studies and insights into current community and business partnerships
We invite you to attend the forum as a community development professional or
representative from small, medium or large business and social enterprise.

3. Facilitator
Gerard Byrne, Volunteering North Queensland
Gerard has had extensive experience in business development in a
wide range of organisations in Australia over the last 25 years. He
has completed post graduate studies in Business and Management
at the University of Queensland, Griffith University, and RMIT.
Gerard’s achievements have been recognised by being awarded Fellow, CPA Australia, and
Fellow, Australian Institute of Management. Nationally, he has served on the CPA Australia
Centre of Excellence, Canberra, and served on numerous professional development,
academic, and business committees and advisory bodies at local, state, and national levels in
Australia.
As Chair of the North Queensland Tourism Awards for three years, he has actively promoted
the development of the Tourism Industry in North Queensland. Gerard’s community work
includes being a volunteer with Volunteering North Queensland, assisting community groups
grow and access Government funding. He is in demand as a speaker nationally on business
and leadership topics.
Keynote Speakers
Andrew Hamilton, Social Ventures Australia
Andrew’s SVA responsibilities include portfolio management and
corporate and investor support in Queensland. He has been with SVA
since 2006, when it initiated the first Social Enterprise Hub in Australia
in Brisbane. Andrew holds a BComm and MBA and has specialised in
sales and marketing roles. These roles include senior management
positions in the financial services and technology sectors for small entrepreneurial firms in
Brisbane. He has served on the boards of Foresters Community Finance and Jabiru
Community Youth and Children’s Services Association.

4. Brian Arnold, North Queensland Small Business
Development Centre
Brian Arnold is the CEO of the North Queensland Small Business
Development Centre and has been in the role for 3 years. The NQSBDC
is social enterprise that operates a Business Enterprise Centre (BEC)
and a business Incubator. The incubator has around 15% Indigenous
business and maintains a very high occupancy rate. The Centre
provides mentoring to Mungalla Station, a social enterprise that run a cattle property and
tourist attraction owned by the Nywaigi people and provides business development
assistance to the people of Palm Island. In addition, the Centre manages a number of other
leading edge projects including “Little Silicon Valley” an ICT incubator. The BEC sees around
1000 clients each year who are in business or thinking of starting one.

• 75% of chief executives say they consider corporate community involvement to be 'an integral
component of strategy and the corporate business model' (Business Council of Australia, 2007).
• 60% of employees surveyed say their primary motivation for participating in workplace giving programs
is that their employer matches their donations (Australian Charities Fund, 2009).
• The benefits of community business partnerships have been found to include: enhancing staff morale; a
more skilled workforce; acquiring knowledge of the community; a higher community profile; access into
new niches and markets; knowledge and product innovation; expanding networking opportunities and
building relations (Social Compass, 2007).
• 74% of employers believe employee volunteering programs improve staff retention levels (Volunteering
Australia, 2007).

Currajong and Garbutt, which supports Activities aimed to improve the health, well being and development
of children aged 0 to 12 years. Communities for Children is funded by the Department of Families, Housing,
