SOUTH EAST ASIA - INDONESIA
In participation with the ADB:
– CCS Scoping Study
• Development of a CCS Roadmap in the region.
– Merbau Field (depleted gas field in South
Sumatra) allocated to ADB for prefeasibility study
on storage potential, if they want to undertake this.
Other activities in the region include:
– Several Japanese and other foreign companies
examining possible projects, including EOR

CONCLUSION: PROGRESS IS BEING MADE …
CCS projects are operating today, in a number of industries
and a number of countries:
– often when carbon capture is already part of the
industrial process and where already well explored
storage locations are available; and
– and often based on EOR, which provides a value on
CO2.
More projects are entering construction and operation
Two large scale power station CCS projects are now under
construction, along with others in other industries
16
18. GLOBAL CCS INSTITUTE
…BUT A NUMBER OF CHALLENGES REMAIN
Overall number of projects static and
development behind targets
High profile failures and cancellations, with
many pointing to a lack of adequate policy
support
Continuing issues with public acceptance of
CCS, despite proven nature of individual
components
17
19. GLOBAL CCS INSTITUTE
KEY MESSAGES
CCS remains a key technology for GHG
mitigation
Momentum cannot afford to stall if long term
GHG targets are to be met
Planning and execution takes time; all elements
of CCS projects must be carefully integrated
Further policy action is vital:
– Projects need adequate policy support if they are to
proceed and demonstrate the potential of the
technology

Notes: steady progress of projects reaching construction 2 projects in Execute in 2009 4 in 2010 6 as per our 2011 survey, updated to 7 projects at the end of 2011 with Air Products entering construction in Texas total number of LSIPs stands at 72, down by 2 projects since the release of the 2011 Status report: 5 projects were removed from the list following their cancellation: Q4 2011 – 2 in Europe (Longannet and Jänschwalde), Q2 2012 – 2 in North America (Project Pioneer in Canada and Sweeny Gasification in the US) and 1 in Australia (Coolimba) 3 new LSIP listings: Datang Daqing in China NRG Energy Parish in the US Caledonia Clean Energy Project in the UK
The United States: at 25 has the highest number of projects of any country or area – 4 operating, 4 in construction and 17 in development planning. a corollary of this activity is a larger number of “casualties” with 9 projects cancelled or put on hold in the past 18 months (following failure to secure government funding and/or reprioritisation of investment) This year t he United States also has its first project under construction that will store CO2 in a deep saline formation, being the Illinois Industrial Carbon Capture and Sequestration (ICCS) project, where the CO2 is being captured from a bio-ethanol plant. One new LSIP was identified in the United States since the release of the 2011 Status Report: the NRG Energy Parish CCS Project in Texas. This project was already in the Institute’s projects database as a smaller-scale project, but was upgraded to LSIP after the volume of CO2 to be captured was expanded from 375,000 tpa to 1.5 Mtpa to meet the demand for CO2 in the local enhanced oil recovery market. Europe: In the last 18 months, five projects have been cancelled or put on hold in Europe: Eemshaven Nuon Magnum in the Netherlands, Kedzierzyn Polygeneration Power Plant in Poland, Immingham CCS Project and Longannet in the UK, Jänschwalde in Germany (note there are now no LSIPs in Germany). A new UK project - the “Caledonia Clean Energy Project” - was added to our LSIP listing in March 2012, after Summit Power announced it was duplicating its Texas Clean Energy Project concept and would submit the project for funding under the UK GBP1 CCS Demonstration Competition. The NER 300 program is likely to be a catalyst for some projects in advanced development planning to reach FID. Project numbers in Canada have steadily increased since 2009 while in Australia the Gorgon CO2 Injection project is progressing and when operational will be the world’s largest CCS project injecting CO2 into a deep saline formation. China continues to be one of the most important markets for CCS deployment. The Institute identified 7 projects in China that are all in the planning stages – one new project identified since the 2011 Survey, the Datang Daqing 350 MW Oxyfuel Combustion Carbon Capture Plant (developed in Eastern China by Datang Heilongjiang Power Generation Co. Ltd and Alstom China). There are currently few projects in developing nations. The inclusion of CCS in the UNFCCC’s Clean Development Mechanism or any future mechanism post the Kyoto Protocol’s first commitment period will be critical to increasing the numbers. AT COP 17 this year there is still the potential to establish an international framework that would provide for the institutional arrangements of CCS under any future UNFCCC mechanism.
Changes since 2011 Status Report: - Air Products project entered construction - Volume of CO2 captured and stored at Sleipner will be expanded by 100,000 -200,000 tpa in 2012, as the existing platform will process additional gas from the nearby Gudrun field, currently under development.
