Rene Magritte
•
•
•

Born: 1898 Died: 1967
Nationality: Belgian
He was part of the surrealism art movement.

•

He is best known juxtaposition of ordinary objects.
(placing objects together that would not normally be
seen together.) he produced images which gave
ordinary objects new translations

•

His images were designed to be thought provoking.
This is seen in works such as ‘Ceci n’est pas une
pipe’
Some of his works include ‘Son of Man’, ‘The talking
room’ and Ceci n’est pas une pipe.

•

•

Mother committed suicide when he was 14 years oldit is said that Magritte witnessed rescuers pulling his
mothers body from the river, the fabric of her dress
was covering her face. This vision haunted him and is
seen in his works with faces covered with cloth.

Salvador Dali

•

•

•

•

Born: 1904 Died:1989 of heart failure
Nationality: Spanish
He was part of the surrealism art movement
Dali is best known for his surrealism paintings,
Photographs, films and sculptures.
Some of his works include ‘Persistence of
time’, ‘The metamorphosis of Narcissus’ and
‘Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on a Beach’
His art works commonly contained images of
armies of ants –which are said to represent
death. They also contained images of melting
soft clocks-which are said to represent the
irrelevance of time in a dream like state.
His parents told him that he was a
reincarnation of his brother who died 9 months
before he was born.
He attended fine art school at the Academy of
San Fernando, which he was expelled from
after he claimed that no one at the school was
fit to examine him.
He tried to commit suicide numerous times
after his wife died but was unsuccessful.
Salvador Dali

This image represents
The story of Narcissus
Who fell in love with his
Own reflection

CONTOUR
LINES:
LINES
Cross contour lines are
drawn lines which travel,
as the name suggests,
across the form. Cross
contours may be
horizontal or vertical, as
on the right side of the
example, or both. Often,
in more complex forms,
cross-contours will be
drawn at varying angles.
In this rather lumpy
example, the grid of
cross-contours looks a bit
like the gridlines on a
globe
Homework: (Due – Tuesday 26th )
CREATE A RESEARCH PAGE ON THE
ARTIST SALVADOR DALI ON A
DOUBLE PAGE OR A3 PAPER.
INCLUDE:
• A COLOURFULL TITLE
• 5 FACTS
• YOUR OPINION ON HIS WORK
• 2 IMAGES
Objectives
To learn what one point perspective is/means.
To learn how to apply this knowledge to your own
surreal room designs.

Outcomes
To have learnt what one point perspective means
and to have produced a one point perspective
drawing of a room with a window and door
Does anybody
know what one
point
perspective
actually means?
Definition
A view looking deep into a picture, where
everything in the picture leads to one
point.
One point perspective
What is a vanishing point?
Where do you think the
vanishing point is in this
image?

What is a horizon line?
Where do you think the
horizon line is?
One point perspective
Where is the
Vanishing point
In this image?

Where is the
Horizon line in
This image?
One point perspective
This is when all
Major lines in an
image lead to one
point, This is called
the vanishing point.
Even though we
Know the railway
Lines are the same
Distance apart they
Appear to meet at
One point in the
Distance the vanishing
Point. (the deepest spot of the picture where things appear to vanish)
With one point perspective the image always leads towards the vanishing point.
The vanishing point sits on the horizon
The horizon is where the sky meets the land.
One point
perspective
For each image
using a coloured
pencil mark and
label the vanishing
point and the
horozan line
One point perspective:
One point perspective window
One point perspective door
Objectives

To understand how to use influences from
both primary (observational drawing)and

create a surreal room design.
To understand how to use surreal artists
work to influence your work in some way.

surreal room.
