9 Mantras to Save One Unit Per Day for Domestic Consumers
1. 9 Mantras to Save One Unit Per Day
for Domestic Consumers
Dr. G. Murugananth. M.E. Ph.D.,
Professor & Head. – EEE Dept.
2. • ENergy Efficiency Research Group (GREEN9)
• Formed in the year 2016
• Initiated activities in the year June 2018
• Registered Professional Society named as “The Institution
of Green Engineers” (IGEN) (Registered under Societies
Registration Act 27 of 1975, wide Registration No:
CN/SR/3032019)
3. Objectives of GREEN9
* To produce skilled Energy Engineers through G9EnSAv Club - CEnA
(Certified Energy Ambassador)
* The quest to reduce the Carbon dioxide footprint by reducing energy
demand through effective energy audit, conservation and management
through EnSAv India 2022
EnSAv India 2022 – To achieve Twenty Lakhs Energy
Efficiency Houses by 2022 with the support of EnSAv Club members, in
aid of seventy fifth year celebration in 2022.
* To design – develop – implement innovative products which can
provide solutions for energy efficiency.
* To promote save energy/renewable energy awareness to the general
public.
4. • EnSAv (Energy Saving Avarness) Club focuses on bringing about a
first-hand realization of the energy crisis and scarcity of natural
resources in the country.
• With the increasing demand for energy, effective management and
conservation of the same has become the need of the hour.
• Recognizing the immense value the Professional Students can bring to
the initiative and taking due consideration of this urgent need,
GREEN9 started Energy Saving Awareness Club (EnSAv Club), to
propagate efficient usage of energy and to educate the society on
climate change issues in the forthcoming years.
5. • To certify the residents with energy efficient house through Big
Awareness Campaign named EnSAv India 2022
• To facilitate club students to achieve energy ambassador certificate
through SOU/Day Audit
• To implement energy efficiency projects to the nearby societies
• To publish the concluded project outcome in indexed Journals
Objectives of ENSAV Club
6. Global Energy scenario
• World oil and gas reserves are estimated to last just 45~50 years and
65~70 years respectively.
• Coal is likely to last over 200 years.
9. Problems faced by Conventional
Power Systems
• Depletion of fossil fuel resources
• Poor energy efficiency
• Environmental pollution
• Located at Remote areas
• Less overall power quality and reliability
• Solution – Distributed Generation

30. Mantra – 2 :
Regular Cleaning
of AC filter &
Use of Natural
Lighting
31. Air Conditioning System:
An air conditioner's filters, coils, and fins require regular
maintenance for the unit to function effectively and efficiently
throughout its years of service.
Neglecting necessary maintenance ensures a steady decline in air
conditioning performance while energy use steadily increases.
Routine cleaning of AC filters, reduces energy consumption by
5 to 15 %.
Clean the evaporator coil
If coil fins are bent, straighten them
Inspect the window seals – maintains cool air escaping
Clean the drain channels to prevent clog
Split AC - Clean the debris from fan, compressor and condenser

40. Energy Efficient FL
• Several types of FLs are used in lodging areas – lobby or
office area
• Types of FL depends on
– Lamp Life
– Energy efficiency
– Regulated power
– Quantity of colour it transmits
• Styles of FL
– T-12 – 12/8 or 11/2 inch dia
– T-8 – 8/8 or 1 inch dia
– T-5 – 5/8 inch dia
41. – Recommended style – T-8 because
• Cost effective
• More illumination
• Better colour
• No flickering
– T-12
• poor colour rendition and causes eye strain
– T-5
• more energy efficient
• Best colour
• Not cost effective
• Cost Comparison - For 36 W, T5 = Rs. 250/- & T8 = Rs. 125

43. Mantra – 5 :
Regular
Defrosting of the
Refrigerator
44. Energy Management opportunities in
Refrigerator
• Get rid of Old one
• Buy an energy efficient appliance
• Location is crucial
• Set optimal temperature
• Close the door without any delay
• Defrost the refrigerator frequently
• Only place the cold food in it
• Check door seals frequently
45. Mantra – 6 :
Usage of Heavy
Equipment in off-
Peak hours
46. Energy Management during Peak
Demands
• DSM – Demand Side Management
• Disconnect the non-crucial loads during load shedding
• Check for the voltage:
– If 240V, switch ON the Submersible Motor – Check for
time to fill the OHT
– If Voltage is < 240V, Time taken to fill the tank will be
higher than operated at 240V.
47. Mantra – 7 :
Avoid Leaving
the Equipment in
Standby Mode
48. Stand By Mode
• Avoid Stand by modes
• Create awareness
• Use appliances with timer control or automatically switch-off
control functions to avoid leaving appliances in standby mode
for a long period.
• When leaving office, arrange for the last-man-out to check and
switch off the power source to all air conditioning, lighting and
office equipment that are not in use.
50. Mantra – 8 :
Optimal Water
Usage &
Temperature
Setting
51. Optimal Water Usage and
Temperature Setting
• Take short showers instead of baths – Reduce the time in showers
• Lower the temperature on your water heater
• Don't let the water run.
• Use cold water for most laundry loads
• Use your dishwasher efficiently.
• Fix leaks
• Install low-flow fixtures
• Install heat traps on your water heater tank.
• Insulate hot-water storage tank.
• Insulate the first few feet of the hot and cold water pipes connected to the water
heater
• Install a timer
• Consider upgrading the clothes washer
• Consider purchasing a new water heater
52. Conservation in water heating
• Water Heating
-Reduce Water Heating Loads
• Use solar water heating system
-Reduce System Losses
• Increase Insulation on Hot Water Pipes
• Increase Insulation on Water Storage Tanks
54. Mantra – 9 :
Replace the
Maximum Utilized
Light with a Solar
LED
55. Solar LED Lights
• LEDs provide brighter luminance with reduced power
• Long lasting
• Low maintenance
• Charged during day time
• Can be effectively used during nights
• Cost may be slightly high – but shorter payback period
56. IF WE SAVE 20%
ELECTRICITY WE CAN
REDUCE 37%* OF THE
ELECTRICITY BILL
AMOUNT.
