On behalf of Brussels Environment and the cities and experts of the network I would like to welcome all of you and thank for joining us today. Among us we have participants based in over 40 cities in 13 European countries.
This meeting is intended not as a formal conference but as an interactive workshop - an opportunity to meet, to exchange and reflect.
A day is short considering the breadth of the topic, but I hope this day will open communication channels between participants who hadn’t met before and enrich the work we will return to afterwards.

Before we get started I would like to say a few words about WHY our network was started and about our publications to date. (My PPT under preparation)
I will then pass the floor to François JEGOU our lead expert who accompanied the networks from the start in all its exchanges, who will tell you more and the purpose and the how of the present workshop (cases ingredients – policy mix…)
Our network is one of a number of networks of cities engaging sustainable urban development that are supported by the URBACT II programme, and we are lucky to have Emmanuel MOULIN, the Director of the URBACT Secretariat with us to give us the wider context.
Then Joy CAREY, Author of who feeds Bristol, Member of the Bristol Food Policy Council and Thematic Expert for our network will reflect on the role of cities in Sustainable Food Governance.

BRUSSELS
After Brussels Environment had engaged in sustainable food research and actions for several years, “sustainable food” was explicitly established a regional priority in a governmental declaration (July 2009 ).
The declaration stressed notably a focus on sustainable gastronomy as a means for attracting tourism and the need to develop sustainable urban agriculture, food transformation, distribution, food services and health education thank to public food procurement in canteens. Calling for a strategic plan to be drawn up involving all stakeholders of the food sector and an inventory of initiatives, the declaration also stressed the role of canteens in educating about healthy, balanced and environmentally friendly diets.
Policy documents and actions adopted since include:
Regional Action Programme of Support to Sustainable Food Demand (2012); Kitchen garden action plan (2012); and Waste prevention plan (2010) that tackles food waste in canteens & households (see baseline study).
