I can tell this joke because I was a bureaucrat for eight years.

A Bureaucrat is a person who spends their day cutting red tape . . . lengthwise!
The job of a leader in any bureaucracy is to help people turn the scissors crosswise.
At the Health Department, I learned this lesson. ASTHO is the Association of State and Territorial Health Officers and provided the 50 state health directors with a great deal of peer-to-peer support.
The Answers4Families project taught me this lesson. Everyone involved in child welfare is in a stressful position. We are dealing with the most difficult family situations, with the most vulnerable children, and often there is just not a good solution. Nevertheless, we must continually do what we can to protect children and to strengthen the families that these children need.
The next thirty minutes will look more like speed dating that a panel discussion.

For the purposes of this discussion, we would call these coworkers and not peers. We all recognize how important it is to have good communication with our coworkers. Please consider that connecting with peers in other locations may be just as important, if not more so.

Thousands of medical school faculty around the country are making sure that that is true. And wiki type sources can be controlled as internal sites for a closed group of people, making the sharing of important information by multiple authors very easy.

So, as you sit down to address your three questions, keep an open mind. Brainstorm. We cannot promise at MCWIC that we can follow up every idea you generate. But we promise to listen and to do everything we can to find the peer-to-peer connections that the children we serve need us to have. And, for sure, we won’t be able to do it if we can’t think of it first.
