Notas del editor

  1. 1. My personal relevance to dance and music is that both have been a huge part of my life. I have danced professionally for several years for the Philadelphia Soul Indoor Arena Football Team and for the Platinum All-Stars. When it comes to music I have been a member of the school choirs all through middle school and high school. Growing up I was exposed to all types of music. I have been to a variety of concerts such as Garth Brooks, Van Halen, America, Bon Jovi, Sammy Hagar, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Backstreet Boys, American Idol Tour, Teddy Geiger, Maroon 5, the Jonas Brothers, as well as the 2006 Live Earth Concert which consisted of over 18 various bands. Over the years, during our vacations we attended many musical events with folk music, local country bands, various artist impersonators, and Broadway and off Broadway musicals.
  2. Dance was first documented in the Middle East and India among the Aboriginal people. Archaeologists have discovered paintings that showed signs of dancing or a form of body language, and as cultures in Egypt advanced, paintings were made showing musicians and dancers. In America, Australia, and Africa the Aboriginal people danced both for spiritual reasons and entertainment. Also it has been said that dance has been around since 3,000 B.C.
  3. Music is found in every known culture, past and present, varying wildly between times and places. Therefore ,music may have been in existence for at least 50,000 years and the first music may have been invented in Africa and then evolved to become a fundamental element of human life.
  4. The popular dances in the 1950’s consisted of the Jitterbug, the Stroll, the Bop, and the Hand Jive.In the 1960’s there was the Mashed Potato, the Twist the Monkey, the Madison, and the Swim. Some sources claim that as many as 500 dances were introduced in this decade. The 1970’s introduced the Mosh, known as the Mosh Pit, and the Pogo. The 1970’s was when Disco first originated and the most popular dance that came from Disco was the Hustle. With the 1980’s came by far the biggest dance craze, breakdancing, it began in the streets in 1970’s but evolved into so much more in the 80’s. The Electric Slide also became very popular in the 80’s and was mostly danced at wedding receptions but then formed into a club dance. The most popular dance of the 1990’s was called Freestyle or Modern dance, which is exactly what the name is, moves created with no thought or planned choreography. There was also the Macarena and Contemporary dance, which requires a mind-body connection, it is a very emotional form of dancing. In the 2000’s Krumping was first introduced, the Running Man, Cha-Cha Slide, Soulja Boy Dance, and for the rest of the popular dances, people formed modified versions of the past dances from the 1950’s to now.
  5. The origination of Rock ‘n’ Roll happened in the 1950’s, as well as Elvis Presley becoming the “first rock star,” then soon after becoming the King of Rock. Bill Haley and the Comets became the first major white band to use black rock ‘n’ roll forms, which were heavy, repetitive, danceable beats. With the 1960’s came artists such as Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Doors, and the Supremes who all became very famous during this time period. In the 1970’s talents such as ABBA, the Bee Gees, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, the Moody Blues, Van Morrison, Van Halen, the Sex Pistols, and Rod Stewart turned the 70’s into a decade to remember.1980’s Pop consisted of the late Michael Jackson, Elton John, Madonna, the Police, Prince, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, Eurythmics, Tina Turner, U2, and Wham! who changed music history forever.Artists and bands such as Blur, Boyzone, East 17, Hanson, Oasis, Pulp, R.E.M., Britney Spears, Spice Girls, and Suede all created what we all know to be the 90’s.The 2000’s brought Coldplay, Beyonce, Usher, Pink, 50 Cent, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga who easily topped the charts and created milestones in music history.
  6. Although the Jitterbug was created in the 1920’s, it increased in popularity in the 1950’s. The name came from the jitters of withdrawal an alcoholic has. The Jitterbug is a type of swing dance. Cab Calloway recorded a song “Call of the Jitterbug,” and filmed a movie “Cab Calloway’s Jitterbug Party,” which populated the name and the dance. The Stroll was one of the most popular line dances in the 1950’s. It was first performed to “C.C Rider” by Chuck Willis but people also did this dance to “Rumble” and “The Stroll” by The Diamonds. This dance could almost always be associated with rhythm and blues and rock and roll music. It resembles a tremendously detailed version of the elementary hand game, Pat-a-cake. It involves various parts of the body which are used to imitate percussion instruments.
  7. In the mid-1950’s a DJ from New York, Alan Freed, created the term “rock ‘n’ roll” for a new, exciting music he began to play on his popular radio station.Rock ‘n’ roll could be described as loud, brash, and with a very strong beat which was aimed towards teenagers. Teenagers in the early 50’s did not have their own music to listen to but the evolution of rock ‘n’ roll was about to change their lives. DJ’s began to play this music which the grownups did not approve of.Performers like Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and many other performers started to create records for the younger generations. They sang about problems the teenagers faced which only added to the popularity.
  8. The Mashed Potato was danced to mostly Dee Dee Sharp’s “Mashed Potato Time”. This dance faintly mirrors the Twist. The Monkey was danced by everyone except one university which the President of the school banned all craze dances. However, everywhere else it was danced to “Monkey Time” which was made popular by Major Lance.Hank Ballard wrote the Twist’s original song which was then heard on American Bandstand Television Show. As the teen dancers twisted their bodies to the song the record producer noticed that it was such a big hit that he went and hired Chubby Checker to perform it live.
  9. During the 1960’s, popular music was being created by younger talent from the UK and the U.S.In the U.S. the Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, the Supremes, and Little Stevie Wonder were successful performers of this decade. From the UK, groups like the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Who, and the Kinks achieved tremendous success during this time period and showed that if you have some talent you could achieve real pop stardom. Many of these bands’ music is still listened to today and has greatly influenced the next generation.
  10. 1. The Hustle has similar steps in common with Swing or Salsa dancing. This dance could either be danced solo, in partners, or in a group line. It was mostly danced to “Staying Alive” and “Saturday Night Fever” sang by the Bee Gees which then became one of the most commonly known movies starring John Travolta.
  11. In the 70’s punk music erupted which contrasted with the music of bands like the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac.David Bowie and the Sex Pistols both presented a radical approach to their music which was extremely different from bands such as the Bee Gees and ABBA.The hit movie “Saturday Night Fever” which was released in 1977 brought the Disco music scene into the forefront. Disco nightclubs started showing up everywhere. Songs like Van McCoy’s “The Hustle” and Donna Summer’s “Love To Love You Baby” became extremely popular Disco dance songs.
  12. Breakdancing has four main moves, toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes or suicides. Toprock refers to a series of steps while standing. Downrock refers to the movement made on the floor with using the hands for support. Power Moves refers to the acrobatic moves which need momentum and physical strength to perform. Freezes are difficult poses which are suspended for a period of time by using the upper body strength to hold the pose. Suicides, which are similar to Freezes, refer to the emphasis of a strong beat, preferably at the end of a routine. When it comes to music selection, there is endless possibilities to what is acceptable for breakdancing. The Electric Slide also became a huge hit in this decade.
  13. In the 1980’s technology changed the sound of music with synthesizers and state-of-the-art production with the arrival of the CD.It is difficult to define one particular sound for this decade because it was such a creative and exciting time for pop music and the conception of rap.
  14. The Macarena was sang by the Bayside Boys, which in 1996 became a worldwide hit spending 14 weeks in the number one spot on the charts. This song, to this day, remains the most popular song out of any club single ever.Krumping is strictly a street dance which is meant for releasing and expressing frustration, anger, and aggression in a non-violent way. It has become a major part of hip-hop dance today. It is danced in the standing position to very upbeat and fast-paced music.
  15. In the 1990’s became a return of guitar bands and the expansion of boy bands and girl groups. Some boy bands have survived and matured their sound such as Hanson who are still performing to this day and teen idol Justin Timberlake who started out in a boy band and is now a solo artist.
  16. The Running Man was first originated in the 1980’s but became most popular in the 2000’s. It was performed by MC Hammer but the dance was created by Paula Abdul while she was Janet Jackson’s choreographer.
  17. Hip hop in the 2000’s created crunk music. Looped, stripped-down drum machine rhythms were usually used in crunk and snap music. This decade now is considered one of the worst decades for music and dance history, or in other words, a decade of decadence; the lyrical words were shocking, the dance moves became sexually explicit and sometimes downright vulgar. The artists of this decade have the freedom of expression and song. This decade could be described as sinful and corrupted, artists seemed to need to make some sort of statement to the people. From Madonna and Britney’s make out session to Adam Lambert’s raunchy live performance on stage.Music and dance scholars have predicted that this decade will be easily forgotten, they feel that we made no mark whatsoever in entertainment history, meaning they do not believe any dance or song will be popular or be carried on in the up and coming decades.
  18. This dance requires two lines of dancers, facing each other, while one couple at a time struts down the middle of the standing dancers. The term stroll can also be used to describe a group dance, such as the Electric Slide, where everyone moves in unison. It was usually played at high school dances, mainly to keep young couples from acting in inappropriate behavior.
  19. The Hand-jive originally was performed while sitting down, but alternatively, it was “danced” while standing around a jukebox in a crowded diner or café.It was created with just the use of hands because the lack of room denied them the space they would need to use their feet.
  20. This dance is mainly known for its jerking movements. You can also add lifts as well as swinging your partner from side to side or through spread legs.In this decade, the Jitterbug was the most popular fast dance.
  21. The Twist reigned in popularity with mostly teens and 20 year olds. It first started out as a song and became quite possibly the biggest dance craze ever.It was such a simple dance that it grew to be worldwide – even across generation gaps.It caused people to dance with no partner contact as well as a whole generation forgetting they ever learned to jive.
  22. The Mashed Potato was a popular dance craze of the 1960’s.It has been said to resemble the Twist somewhat.
  23. It became popular because of Major Lance’s “The Monkey Time.”Johnny Bravo’s animated series often referred to the Monkey dance. Fun fact: Johnny Bravo was created to resemble Elvis as well as live in the city of Aron, which happens to be Elvis Presley’s middle name.
  24. The Hustle is considered a catchall name for several disco dances in the 1970’s.It became international when Van McCoy and the Soul City Symphony’s song, “The Hustle,” came out.
  25. It’s a four wall line dance which has received repeated attention due to extensive copyright claims by choreographer Ric Silver.Ric Silver was commissioned to create the dance as a way to market and generate buzz for the reopening of the New York disco club Vamps Disco. The original dance had 22 steps in it, something Silver planned purposely in honor of his birthday, January 22.
  26. The term Breakdancing refers to the breaks in music, and the movements that can be linked with these breaks. It started in the Bronx and it became popular because it was introduced to the New York street scene. The best breakdancer, in the 1980’s, was often the best fighter or gang member on the street.
  27. The root word “Krump” is a backronym for Kingdom Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise. The teenagers who created this dance saw it as a way to escape their gang life and to “release frustration” in a positive, non-violent way.The four primary moves are wobbles, arm swings, chest pops, and stomps. It is rarely choreographed unlike other hip hop dances. There is a less aggressive version of Krumping, it’s called Clowning, which was created in 1992.
  28. The Macarena is a Spanish song about a woman of the same name. The dance to this song remains the most popular out of any club single ever.It became the second longest running #1 and best selling debut single of all in the U.S. in 2002.
  29. Dances from this time period include: the Cupid Shuffle, the Soulja Boy dance, Single Ladies, Lean Wit It Rock Wit It dance, and much more.Since this time period is so diverse from the others, and since we do not have any dances that are believed to last through the years, there really is no explanation or history behind them.
  30. For my application component, I created a video that will go through all the decades, and in it you will see different dances performed by my friends and I as well as some videos my friends from other states sent me who dance videos. You will see my friends who I had met back in 2008 when I attended a New York Dance Convention, Professional Dancers from California, my dance coach and choreographer who is also from California and last but not you will see the youngest professional hip hop dancer in Virginia I have ever met. Along with each dance you will hear different songs that were played in that time period. Some of the dances I went further into detail with are also in the video.
  31. Instead of musical chairs, my class activity will include rubber play mats and music/dances from every decade starting with the 1950’s. I will ask for everyone to come and make a circle in the middle of the room around the mats and I will explain how you have to do a certain dance to each song that will be played. I will then play obvious songs such as: the Twist, the Macarena, Wipeout, Stayin’ Alive, Soulja Boy, and the Electric Slide. As you walk around the mats, you will have to dance and then obviously once the song stops, you have to stop and stand on a mat. Whoever is left standing is out. Then the final four people will have to answer trivia questions and if you get three questions wrong, your out, and whoever is the last one standing is the winner.
  32. Now that you know how much music and dance can influence each other as well as next generation of entertainment I want to explain how during my research I also came to realize how much influence dance and music has on the way we behave, dress, and act. Music, along with dance, can be very comforting, they are able to put someone into a certain state of mind. They can also persuade a person to break out in dance, belt out a catchy tune, sing in the shower, or even play air-guitar.The power of music can manipulate a person’s emotions within a matter of seconds.Music has such a strong influence in human behavior. It produces specific emotional states and spontaneous reactions. We are constantly relating our emotions to certain music, if your mad you might listen to louder and more aggressive songs as opposed to if your in love you might listen to upbeat cute little love songs. Music is a form of language that communicates different experiences. The most amazing part about it is that we understand and respond to it naturally without having to actually learn it.Last but not least, I feel as though the biggest influence dance and music can have on one person is the power of healing, and once you realize how much of an impact is has on us, you begin to understand the power of music and dance it has on our everyday lives.
