9. European Time In a capsule Loures Loures is a city and a municipality to the north of Lisbon. Created on 26 July 1886 by a royal decree, the municipality currently occupies an area of 169 km² and has about 200,000 inhabitants (2001). The city itself has a population of 15,967 inhabitants. The municipality is basically divided into three areas: the rustic one to the north, the urban one to the south and the urban-industrial to the east. In Loures, the proclamation of the Republic happened one day before the rest of the country: it was on 4th October 1910 that the Republicans from Loures proclaimed the establishment of the new regime, in the old Town Hall. 4th October Square Town Hall

Nowadays things are very diferent, since most of the agricultural fields have been replaced by buildings. Our town has a little bit of everything: We have gyms, markets, super markets, a vast number of stores that sell everything from lockers to shoes. And recently a shoping centre, called “Loureshopping”, has been built. But that´s not all. A new hospital and an underground connection to Lisbon have been anounced for Loures. European Time In a capsule Secondary School José Afonso is located in the center of Loures which allows the school to be attended by a school population from the most diverse areas of the municipality . It became operational on 17 October 1975, being the first school in the municipality of Loures. Prior to being a state school, it was named Secondary School of Loures, and was attended by about 70 students, some of which on a boarding regime. In 1999, the school became known as High School José Afonso, Loures in honour of José Afonso (a Portuguese singer and composer). He is very famous not only because of his activist songs but also for a revolution that happened in Portugal (one of his songs was used as a counter-sign in the “carnation revolution” that led to the fall of the fascist regime).
