10. Why Remember the Past? Over 100 million peaceful Africans were kidnapped from the continent of Africa and sold into chattel slavery for over 400 years. We, those of us who are Africans born in America, are here because our enslaved Ancestors survived the 4 to 6 month journey of the middle passage and they survived enslavement. We owe it to their memory to honor them, their struggles, and their story. June 19, (Juneteenth) marks the true emancipation of Africans enslaved in America, and we must remember our Ancestors by returning to the past and learning from it, so we can move forward to the future.
