About North Seattle Community College (NSCC): Established in 1970, NSCC is an accredited 2-year public college. It is is one of 34 community and technical colleges in Washington and is part of the Seattle Community College District, which also includes Seattle Central and South Seattle Community Colleges and the Seattle Vocational Institute.The mission of the NSCC Library is to support the college's educational and service goals by ensuring that all students, faculty, and staff will receive the best possible service, information, resources, and equipment in an environment conducive to learning.We combine traditional academic resources such as face-to-face classroom teaching and a library with a print collection with an acclaimed online learning program, academic databases accessible through the library website, multimedia tools available for checkout at the Library reference desk, and the Student Instructional Media Production Center, or SIMPC, which is housed inside the NSCC Library. Academic and workplace environments are moving rapidly from text-based communications to communication based in digital technologies and multimedia. The SIMPC provides students with access to media resources and basic, personal instruction enabling them to incorporate digital and analog audiovisual media into their course assignments and presentations. Students may check out digital cameras, Flip video cameras, and digital audio recorders at the reference desk. Students are directed to the SIMPC for assistance in editing, reformatting, and manipulating the media files they create.

11. VISUAL LITERACY
Visual literacy is a set of abilities that
enables an individual to
effectively find, interpret,
evaluate, use, and create images
and visual media. Images and
visual media may include
photographs, illustrations,
drawings, maps, diagrams,
advertisements, and other visual
messages and representations,
both still and moving. Visual
literacy skills equip a learner to
understand and analyze the
contextual, cultural, ethical,
aesthetic, and technical
components involved in the
construction and use of images
and visual media. A visually
literate individual is both a critical
consumer of visual media and a
competent contributor to a body
of shared knowledge and culture.
This working definition of visual literacy developed
by the Association of College and Research
Libraries (ACRL) Image Research Interest
Group (ACRL/IRIG).
