Assuming that we are heading for a very
dry and hot summer starting in July, we
will need to prevent the plants and shrubs
from becoming parched.. This can be
done by adding good organic matter to
your borders which will hold the moisture.
This is particularly important in light sandy
and gritty soils. If you are planting tubs
and pots, add moisture retaining gel
granules which when watered will swell
into a jelly from which the plant can draw
moisture.
If there is going to be a drought, you
may like to consider more tolerant
planting schemes which will thrive in dry
soil. These may include Lavander or
Santolina (cotton lavender) with silver
foliage and yellow flowers, Rock Rose,
Cistus, Brooms-Cystisus and Artemisia.
Herbaceous perennials such as Oriental
Poppies, Red Hot Pokers, Montbretia,
Penstemon and a huge range of
geraniums are also quite happy in dry soil.
When cutting the lawn, set the height
adjuster one notch higher. This will help
prevent the grass drying out and keep it

No one could go away hungry, as there
was a Mediterranean BBQ serving
kebabs, sausages and burgers
throughout the afternoon, as well as the
chance to buy some beautiful homemade

cake business – delicious! The café,
once again run by the school staff, served
traditional teas and coffees, and there
was an ice-cream van parked in the
playground for cooling the children down!
This year the inflatable village from Go

inflatables to bounce, climb or slide on.
There was a “gladiator” style bouncy
platform where you could challenge a
friend to a duel, seeing who could stay on
the longest whilst bashing each other
with giant batons!
There were many other stalls for the
children to spend their money on, with
knock down the cans, hook a duck, sand
art, hairspraying and tombola’s galore to
name a few. Shopping opportunities for
parents included stalls selling jewellery,
clothes, handbags, cards and toys.

During the week there were three
sports afternoons organised by Miss

included competitions with other local
schools in the borough as well as a folk
dance festival. As always is the case at
this school the parents were
tremendously supportive taking children

fantastic assembly in the hall with
everybody singing the World Cup song.
