What is EMBRYOLOGY?
 All the cells of the body are formed from a single cell called ZYGOTE
 It is formed by the union of female germ cell called ovum & the male
germ cell called spermatozoon
 Enormous no. of cell are produced by repeated process of cell-division
 Which ultimately give rise to an Organism

EMBRYOLOGY
 It is a branch of Development Anatomy which describes the changes &
processes of changes up to birth
Parts of Embryology
 General Embryology
 Systemic Embryology

2
Stages of Development (Total 38-40 weeks)
 Pre embryonic period: 1st – 2nd weeks
Ovum fertilized, proliferates & give rise to Bilaminar germ layers
 Embryonic period: 3rd -8th weeks
Formation of trilaminar germ disc. 3 germ layers give rise to specific
tissues & organs
 Fetal period: 9 weeks – Birth
Maturation of tissues, organs & rapid growth of body occurs
