Producer(s): Hannah Alley
Production Title: Music Video: “Guns and
Horses” by Ellie Goulding
Brief: To make a music video that contains typical conventions of the chosen genre, in this
case Pop.
Aim:
To create a music video to the song by the Pop artist Ellie Goulding called “Guns and
Horses”.
Description of your intentions:
My music video will be half narrative, half performance based. The performance part will be
my female actress Georgina walking through the woods, the camera following her, and she
mimes to the song after having "just been through a break up", finding random props laying
on the floor in her path as she goes along. However, these props are actually figures of her
imagination, even though the viewers will still be able to see the props. Each time she
curiously picks up a prop, it will merge into a flashback of her last relationship. This will
happen each time with the props where they link to a "stage" of her relationship since I
want to portray the "5 stages of a relationship" through these flashbacks. This will of course
be the narrative part of the music video where Matt, my other actor comes into it. Then,
each time it will go back to the performance and Georgina will realise that the "prop" in her
hand has dissappeared and isn't actually really there, so she will continue her journey in the
woods.
I plan to use most of the performance-based shots where Georgina is miming to the camera,
in a woods setting, as I want the audience to feel like they are following her on a journey
through a mysterious world. Most of the narrative shots will be based in the couple’s
houses, at bars, restaurants, etc. – mainly suitable settings to portray believable flashbacks
from their past relationship.
Also, in the music video I will use about 5-6 shots in total of my friend Jess who is a gymnast,
performing rhythmic gymnastics with a ribbon in a field. I will however add a slow motion
effect to these shots so that there is a strong contrast between performance, narrative and
these shots. I want the ribbon to represent Georgina’s flowing emotion which is another
reason why it will be in slow motion; - for a stronger dramatic/emotional effect.
2. Target Audience:
My target audience will be of the “mainstream”, Pop fan base as the song is of the Pop
genre. However, the song is very acoustic so it may draw in perhaps “Indie” fans or anyone
who enjoys guitar music. This makes the target audience very wide, drawing in more
viewers.

Songs that inspired me are ones by Ellie Goulding such as “Wish I Stayed”, “Starry Eyed”, “I
Almost Do” by Taylor Swift, “Time” by Delilah and more. This is because these are all songs
based on love, and I wanted to create a music video based around a couple so that the
audience can follow a narrative.
Music videos that have inspired me are mainly Taylor Swift’s ones, especially such as “You
Belong With Me”. This music video really influenced me because I love the idea of the split
scenes, where the male is in his room, and the female is in her room, and they are sending
messages to eachother. You see life from each’s point of view.
