16. Academic History
I’ve spent the past two years at York College studying media studies, the first year I completed my
Creative Media Studies Diploma Level 2 and through this course I learnt so much about the
world of media studies and all the different elements of media, including the theory and physical
sides. We spent the first year spending a few weeks on different projects, each project was about a
different format of media, we would spend a few of the weeks completing theoretical work,
researching different relevant topics and finding more information about them in order to make
the most successful end project, then we would spend the rest of the term completing the design
side. I thoroughly enjoy working in media and finding out more and more about it. I’m passionate
about and eager to find out more about it.
I appreciate the fact that on my course I have been given the opportunity to explore all the
different media platforms, e.g. audio (radio and podcasts), animation (video games), print
(posters, magazines, photography, journalism), film (music videos, short films). Through creating
these projects, I gradually built up my skills in Photoshop, Premiere and InDesign over the two
years. In order to develop my knowledge of media and to gain a deeper understanding of the
varied aspects of media I attended the 2018/19 Aesthetica Short Film Festival which showcase
short films and upcoming artists in the film industry. I enjoy the film festival because watching
the array of different films and attending different workshops inspires me and helps me further my
knowledge on cinematography, directing and photography.
17. Current Study
My current study is the creative media diploma that I am currently completing, this course has taught me so m
any different things about the world of media and how it is used behind the scenes in everyday life. Through this
course I have completed multiple projects that have developed my skills and knowledge about media studies.
I’ve learnt skills in photoshop, premiere design, InDesign and can successfully create a range of pieces of media
through the software's. It takes time to understand and use these different software's but after two years my skills
gradually developed meaning that I can now use them confidentially. A few examples of what I have done on
these programmes is, a music video which I edited with my own shots that I filmed, multiple magazines, a
podcast and a lot of posters. I especially use photoshop because I find it the most useful and there are endless
tools that come in useful in my field, magazines and photography.
An important part of my journey through media studies has been creating my final project at the end of my first
year of media studies. I was given nine weeks to create a form of media of my choice. I decided to create a
project based on my personal interests and passions, an abstract fanzine about feminism and photography. I am
thankful that the project allowed me to have the freedom to create something that was so interesting and
important to me. I find media, femininity and the different platforms and social structures that women follow in
media very interesting. An aspect of photography that I’m especially interested in is photojournalism. For
example, work from Robert Capa. Capa’s photographs are so natural and really allow you to experience and
have a personal connection with the photo without the need of words or any explanation, he relies on the
viewer’s cultural knowledge and understanding of emotions and contemporary events.
18. The Future
In the future I’m interested in perusing a career in ether
advertising or journalism, in my media course I have developed a
love and wide interest surrounding magazine and photography,
and in order to peruse this career choice I want to make sure that
I am as educated about the world of media in order to have a head
start against other potential journalists as I understand it is a
competitive market in where the best and most educated people
will succeed. Therefore my university degree will hopefully push
me in the right direction.
19. Outside of the course
As well as my passion for media, I am also a very ambitious person, I enjoy
setting myself goals so that I can gain more Skills and develop my academic
and cultural knowledge. An example of a goal that I set myself was to
complete the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. DofE gave me the
opportunity to push myself and reach new limits that before I didn’t know I
could reach. Duke of Edinburgh allowed me to learn new things through four
different – but equally rewarding sections - physical, skill, volunteering and
expedition. The different sections all contained different lessons that I will be
able to apply to a lot of different aspects in my life in the future. For example,
volunteering taught me patience and understanding, whereas the expedition
taught me resilience and motivation.
20. Conclusion
I am applying for a BA degree in Media Studies because media
studies is a topic, I am extremely passionate about. It interests me
because I find the way that media influences different aspects of
everyday society fascinating. I have spent a lot of time learning
about the theoretical side of media and spent time in detail
learning about different concepts and how they can be applied to
everyday life. I have spent the past two years studying media
studies at York College where I have had the opportunity to
create a range of different media projects, which has allowed me
to learn a lot about production in media studies.
