Assume the map below shows one that Orange County used for elections. Each election Orange County is made up of three
election districts (polling stations are labeled A – I).

In the past, the three districts have been:
    • North Orange County comprised of polling stations A, B, & C
    • Central Orange County comprised of polling stations D, E, & F
    • South Orange County comprised of polling stations G, H,& I

The state government wants to change the boundaries of each district, and this will reassign polling stations as follows:

    • West Orange County comprised of polling stations A, D, & G
    • Central Orange County comprised of polling stations B, E, & H
    • East Orange County comprised of polling stations C, F,& I

By examining the results from each polling station for the last election, determine what difference the re-alignment would
make in future elections if voting patterns at each polling station remained similar. In other words, which party won each
district in the previous election, and what party will win each district in the proposed new alignment.

1. In the previous election how many of the 3 seats did each party win?

2. If the new alignment is used, and the voting pattern is similar, how many of the 3 seats will each part win?

3. Based upon this difference, which party do you believe is proposing the change?

4. Attempt to come up with a situation where a type of gerrymandering might occur that is not done purely for
the purpose of 1 party gaining an advantage.
