Pick a psalm of life
1. A Psalm of Life
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
In The Psalm of Life the life lesson that is taught is to live everyday to the
fullest. I feel that it is important for children to understand that what they do with
their lives is up to them. Consequently, it is up to them to start each day new and
try and accomplish what will make them happy. This poem is a great way to get
kids thinking about what they would like to do when they grow up. It is a good
start to an occupations unit (Social studies). In addition, it could be used in a poetry
unit. This can be accomplished through general poetry or an authors unit on
Longfellow (Reading). I would use this piece in the grades of 4-6. I pick a higher
grade for this piece because of its length and cognitive depth. It would be easier for
the 4-6 graders to really recognize the importance of the message.
