The Role of Systems Librarians Changes as Libraries Services Move from Local to Cloud Computing. Nowadays, most academic libraries facing new challenges: less funding, increased activities, materials in different formats, and technology shift from local hosted toward web-based and cloud computing. This new trend improves library services in terms of Collaboration, Mobility, Service, Social networking/Marketing, Resource sharing, Object preservation. Based on these new trends, the systems librarian’s role changes from a system administrator to a facilitator, who could use technology to provide new services and make the library more interesting and appealing to users.

12. Cloud Computing & Systems Librarian’s
Role
Cloud Computing
• Add network complexity
• Software from different vendors
• Easy to access from the web
• Flexibility, more software to choose
• Solutions tailored for specific needs
• Collaboration
• Add security concerns
• Need to be reliable
Systems Librarians Role:
• More planning/designing work
• More integration/overall control
• More web related work
• More programming skills
• More customer services skills
• More communication skills
• Less daily system admin work
• Less Database administration skills
Nowadays, most academic libraries facing new challenges: less funding, increased activities, materials in different formats, and technology shift from local hosted toward web-based and cloud computing. Based on these new trends, the systems librarian’s role changes too.
Definition: The cloud is the term for networked computers that distribute processing power, applications, and large systems among many machines. In library, it means that libraries use external resources to deliver ITrelated services to the users. It improve library services in terms of Collaboration, Mobility, Service, Social networking/Marketing, Resource sharing,Object preservation.
The library is the place which provides the information to the users The first key element: is the user, who is the librarians’ patronThen, the resources and materials, which have the information needed by the patronThe 3rd key element is the Technology, which is the tool to help library deliver access to their collections , and enable the library to offer new services to the users. The Systems Librarians Role is the administer of the systems, whose work is to manage, maintain and apply the technology in the library, in order to provide service to the end users. Each element includes different groups of sub-elements, which we will discuss in the following slides:
Nowadays, everyone is so acclimated to the web and the need for portable access to the internet is very important to library users. The rising use of smartphones and tablets has big impact on how library delivering their services, the content in libraries web sites need to be accessed from PCs, laptops, as well as mobile devices and iPads.Cloud computing bring big changes to the ways that libraries engage with technology, it offers many interesting opssiblites and helps library reduce cost and increase capacity, reliablity. it provides more solutions to fit specific needs, so the systems librarians is doing more work on configuring the view of each software and to customize the branding, color schemes, and set functional preferences and policies according to local users’ needs. In addition, the system’s librarians are involved more in training and supporting their users.
With the release of Mobile Access, mobile device users can now enjoy a variety of new features while accessing library resources anytime, anywhere. Some vendors requireregistration for access through an institutional subscription. For example.
In terms of library resources, cloud computing could help library to simplify operations and build a more inclusive platform designed to handle all different forms of content. Role changed to work closelywith the service providers to make sure that different formats of the materials could be stored and retrieved in the remote database securely.
With the release of Mobile Access, mobile device users can now enjoy a wide variety of new features while accessing library resources anytime, anywhere. it must have registered for access through an institutional subscription.
After adopting cloud computing, library technology products take the form of software as a service, different types of business arrangement apply, including a fee based subscription of a resource provided by external vendors, who will take care of the installation, updates and patches. The Systems librarians are relieved from system admin responsibility and maintaining application software, in order to focus on web interface customization and delivering service with a more direct impact for users.
Transformations in library technology such as Cloud computing demands the systems librarians’ role transformed at the same time. The Systems Librarians needs more experience in dealing with service providers outside the library, as well as to be more involve in training and supporting their traditional library users. Their role changed from a system admintor to a facilitator who could use technology to provide new services and make the library more interesting and appealing to the users.
The Systems Librarians must focus their expertise with the highest impact relative to library’s core services, Role change from system-related work to a to customer service provider,Their work involved more on web- interface creation, and they will be more engaged with electronic and digital content, and therefore, they will face more challenge on data conversion for different types of database hosted by different vendors.
