▪ Henri Fayol (29 July 1841
– 19 November 1925) was
a French mining engineer,
mining executive, author
and director of mines
who developed a general
theory of business
administration that is
often called Fayolism.
▪ He and his colleagues
developed this theory
independently
of scientific
management but roughly
contemporaneously.

▪ Fayol's work was one of the first comprehensive
statements of a general theory of management.
▪ He proposed that there were five primary
functions of management and fourteen principles
of management.

▪ In his original work, Administration industrielle et
générale; prévoyance, organisation,
commandement, coordination, controle, five
primary functions were identified:
1. Planning

Division of labor
• Work must be divided & allotted to people according to their
expertise.
One boss
• A subordinate should receive orders & be accountable to one
boss at a time.
Authority & responsibility
• Right to get things done from subordinates
• Obligation for the performance of the job.

Unity of direction
• One plan for a group of activities having similar objectives
Equity
• Manager must be fair & impartial to all age, caste, sex,
relation, religion.
• Does not mean total absence of harshness.
Order
• Proper & systematic arrangement of things & people.

Discipline
• Subordinates must respect their superiors & obey their orders.
Initiatives
• Provide opportunity to employees to suggest new ideas,
experiences, & new methods of work.
Fair remuneration
• Remuneration to be paid to the workers should be fair,
reasonable, satisfactory & rewarding of the efforts.

Stability of tenure
• Employee should be appointed after keeping in view principles of
recruitment & selection, but once appointed their services should be served.
Scalar chain
• The chain of superiors ranging from the ultimate authority to the lowest.
• Every order, message, request has to pass through scalar chain.
Subordination of individual interest to general interest
• Reconciliation should be achieved between individual & group interests.
• Reconciliation of mutual differences & clashes by mutual agreement.

• Team spirit, i.e. harmony in the working group
& mutual understanding.
Centralization & decentralization
• Concentration of authority at the top level.
• Decentralization means disposal of decision
making authority to all levels of organization.
