Newspaper article
• There are two types of newspaper
articles:
• Tabloids -are papers like ‘The Sun’, ‘The
Mirror’, ‘The Daily Mail’, ‘The Express’
and ‘The Star’. In contrast to these are
broadsheets like ‘The Times’, ‘The
Guardian’ and ‘The Daily Telegraph’.
• Broadsheets -In contrast to these are
broadsheets like ‘The Times’, ‘The
Guardian’ and ‘The Daily Telegraph’.
Identifying the conventions of a
tabloid article.
• The tabloid has a headline that is very bold and big that is very humours
and informative to the public. The tabloid is very informal.
• There’s lots of pictures and the pictures are very informal, as some images
on a tabloid paper I very inappropriate.
• The paragraphs are short and easy to read, the first paragraph always keep
the reader want to read more. The paragraph sums up the story.
• There’s a by line were the author name is written on the paper, this tells
the audience who wrote it.
• There’s column used in the newspaper article but they never use it on the
front page.
• The tabloid article provides information mostly about gossip with people
like celebrity.
• They have interviews with the celebrities so they so they can quote things
of them and use it in the text. They are very biased and can catch people
attention very easily.
Identifying the conventions of a
Broadsheet article.
• Broadsheet are a bit more serious and informative than a tabloid
they normally talk about all the serious things that are going on.
• The headlines and subheadings are more serious and more formal.
They don't gossip about the celebrities very much.
• They have paragraphs that are short that start of very formal and
very serious. They provide more information than images.
• The go into detail with things, they mostly talk about the things that
happening today, the weather.
• They are less colourful the page is more black and white. Are often
known as the ‘quality press’ being more informing and formal in the
manner they convey information and news stories.
• Form: Newspaper article
• · Structure Paragraphs, columns
• · Content: News, current affairs, information,
facts, opinions, statistics
• · Technical conventions:
• · Mode of address: Formal, serious – depends
on the newspaper. Can be more informal if it
is a tabloid.
Identifying the web tabloid
conventions
• The tabloid website newspapers are less formal than the
broadsheet, its mostly gossip and scandal
• It can be downloaded on androids, they can go on live chat for each
articles so people can have a discussion about the article.
• There’s comment boxes at the bottom of each articles
• They got a slide show of the main articles were the readers find it
more interesting. There’s tabs on stuff like showbiz, sports, weather.
• They have a sharing button were people can share the article on
place like twitter.
• The headline is very big and in the centre of the top of the page.
There’s images in between the each paragraphs
• Website like the daily mail have captions that explain what’s in the
image, they have side tabs that link to different articles. The top
articles are always the latest articles.
Identifying the web broadsheet
conventions
• A broadsheet website keep the page really plain and less out of the place. They
update the page daily with different kind of stories
• They have picture that suitable for the story and have a by-line of the name of the
author on the page.
• The page talks about all the current affairs and less of gossip. There apps that can
be downloaded on androids.
• There’s navigation bars that have different topics on it such as sports, politics,
weather.
• They have comment boxes on some of the article pages not all, were people can
comment there ideas.
• Its more social as they have hyperlinks to different pages to other pages.
• Some have videos on them for example the independent
• The headline of the article on the website sums up the stories and there’s no
column and there’s Bigger spaces between paragraphs
• There’s side boxes that have additional information
