Types of Hearing Aids for Different Hearing Disorders
1. Types of Hearing Aids for Different Hearing Disorders
Hearing aids are special tools that
are of great help to people with
hearing disorders. The device is an
electroacoustic gadget which fits in
behind the ear of the person having
hearing impairment. It is designed to
amplify and modulate sounds. A
hearing aid functions with the use of a microphone which is being
used to take in sounds from the area and a speaker afterwards
amplifies the sound in the ear. The sound or the volume can be
changed. It depends on how quiet or how loud a place or a
setting is. The level of sounds in a particular place will determine
how loud the amplified sound will be transmitted into the ear.
First time hearing aid users may find it difficult to adjust wearing
the device. It is very usual that most hearing aids block the ear
canal which causes sound reverberations. Commonly called as
“occlusion effect”, some hearing aid users experienced it and
takes time to adjust in using the device. Initial fit causes
irritation, inconvenience and discomfort to the user. Good thing is
that there are some hearing aid options that lessen the occlusion
effect. Open fit hearing aids, invisible in the canal hearing aids
and an oral hearing loss treatment were some alternatives that
can replace the traditional type. To those who are patient in the
adjustment period upon wearing the device, here are some tips
ways in which you can adjust easily wearing it:
¬ Talking to yourself to make adjustments to the new sound of
your voice will be the first step
2. ¬ Make gradual conversions from quiet to louder surroundings as
you adjust to new hearing aids
¬ Trim down background noise in your place. You may turn off
appliances that are not necessary as well as closing doors and
windows so as o prevent sounds from coming in
¬ Identify sounds and try to recognize them
¬ Wear the device several times daily with at least 30 minute
intervals
¬ If painful and you feel some discomfort for several days, you
may consult your hearing aid providers
During the early days, hearing aids are called “ear trumpets” or
“ear horns”. These are funnel-like amplification cones being used
to gather sound energy and passed through the ear canal. Other
devices then include bone anchored hearing aid type and cochlear
implant. As of present, there were already innovations when it
comes to developing hearing devices. From analog type to digital
type, one may choose which type best suits them. They usually
vary in size power and circuitry. Here are some of the hearing aid
classifications:
¬ Behind The Ear (BTE) --- This type is composed of a small
curved case made of plastic that fits behind the ear and a small
piece of tube that passes behind the ear device into a customized
ear mold that lies over the ear canal. BTE has the advantage of
being highly accessible and is easy to control. It also has the
most powerful sound amplification compared to other hearing aid
3. types. This type is usually used by children with hearing disorders
but it is actually intended for people of all ages especially those
who are suffering from severe hearing impairment.
¬ Open Fit --- This type is just like the standard BTE type. It
consists of a housing case that lies behind the ear and a tube that
passes the ear bowl. Open Fit hearing aid does not have a mold
that lies over the ear bowl, instead, tubing ends in a small tip
allows a more natural sound and completely removes the
occlusion effect. It also has a smaller case and much thinner
tubing which makes it more comfortable to wear than the BTE
type.
¬ In The Ear--- This is the most common type being used
today. In The Ear hearing aid fits into the inner and outer ear and
can be used for all types of hearing disorders. Compared to
behind the ear hearing aid type, in the ear hearing aid has a
more stable fit and offers easier setup. In addition, this type of
device is not affected by wind noise as much as BTE. This type is
molded to fit the outer ear bowl and some versions are extremely
small and very light in weight. It also has no external wires or
tubes and is suited to mild to moderate hearing damages.
¬ In-The- Canal (ITC) and Completely In The Canal (CIC) --- In
the canal type rest inside the ear canal which provides a device
that can hardly be seen. They are not generally recommended for
persons who have severe hearing damages because of its small
size making the ability to amplify sound much lesser. ITC hearing
aid is limited only for those persons with adequate size ear
canals.
¬ Invisible In the Canal Hearing Aids (IIC) --- This type is fitted
4. deeper into the ear canal making t invisible to the non-
wearers. Adjustment of IIC is usually wireless and some users
utilize their cellular phones in making adjustments to memory or
volume. Occlusion effect is reduced and allows a more natural
hearing familiarity.
Hearing aids are very important to those who have hearing
disorders. Patience is needed during the adjustment period. After
the adjustments, enhanced hearing abilities will certainly follow.
