When you have your hearing tested by a hearing healthcare professional,
you will often see your results in the form of a graph. This graph is called an
audiogram, and depending on the outcome of your testing will show you
what kind of loss you have. Below is a blank example.
Notice that the y-axis (vertical) is labeled “hearing level (dB)”, while the x-
axis (horizontal) is labeled “frequency (Hz)”. These two axes are correlated
with loudness (dB) and pitch (Hz). Loudness goes from soft to loud as we
descend the graph. Pitch goes from low to high as we cross from left to
right. Normal hearing for an adult is considered to be 0-20 or 0-25 dB across
all pitches. However, as people age, hearing in the high pitches tends to
worsen, sometimes spreading across the mid and low pitches with time.
Your hearing test results will help you to understand how much of your
hearing is lost and in what pitch ranges.

2. As your audiologist or hearing healthcare professional completes your pure
tone testing, he/she will make marks for left and right ear responses. Left
ear responses are denoted by an ‘X’, while right ear responses are denoted
by an ‘O’. Responses may also be color coded with left ear responses in blue
and right ear responses in red.
HEARING STATUS RANGE
Normal range -10dB to 25dB
Mild hearing loss 26dB to 40 dB
Moderate hearing loss 41 dB to 55 dB
Moderately-severe hearing loss 56 dB to 70 dB
Severe hearing loss 71 dB to 90 dB
Profound hearing loss 91 dB +
Where your ‘X’s and ‘O’s fall will show you your hearing status. Above is a
chart of degrees of hearing loss. Remember that your hearing may not fall
into only one category! Your audiologist can further explain your audiogram
results in terms of type of loss and treatment options!
