No, despite persistent rumours of the opposite, books are still wanted by patrons and while circulation is declining it is still high enough to claim ~40% of library staff hours. Modern Warehouse Management, Supply Chain Management and Track and trace can limit the amount of time spent on material handling and Danish Libraries in collaboration with Lyngsoe Systems has developed a new software which efficiently helps manage shelf space, floating collection distribution, batch management as well as tracking each item throughout the system without the use of paper slips. Due to accurate metrics, libraries using this system can limit shelf space while retaining circulation and set a storage picking speed of 285 items/person/hour

“The library, as we know it, is obsolete.
Now that most books are accessible
online, the building once dedicated
to silence and study is increasingly
turning into a lively public gathering
place—when it’s not disappearing
altogether.”

The monetary gains realized by the project saving have been re-invested, in Copenhagen
the money has been given to the Library division where they will fund two projects:
The Danish Digital Library and the Digitization Project as well as financing for the employees’
competence development 2014 - 2017.
In Aarhus, the realized gain is used partly to finance IMMS operations and development,
and to handle publicly directed services at the libraries in Aarhus commune. Read the full report here

“Thirty years ago, people were thinking libraries wouldn’t survive the internet – that they’d just
die out,” says NSW State Librarian John Vallance, who supervises NSW’s public library network.
“A lot of city planners and council planners were actually planning for a future without local
libraries, because the assumption was that everyone would be at home looking at their
screens. It’s hard to imagine pundits getting something more wrong.” Far from losing relevance,
“libraries are undergoing a renaissance”, says Vallance. It turns out that people love being
around books. “And around other people. In fact, I would say the people are just as important
as the books. That’s something the planners never really understood.”
But of the 41 million loans a year from NSW public libraries, less than 5 per cent are in
digital format.
