ECOVAST (European Council for the Village and Small Town) is a pan-european NGO supporting local initiatives of heritage conservation and sustainable rural development in villages and small towns. Croatian Section of ECOVAST , in cooperation with other similar national organizations and with involvement of local citizens (local governments, volunteers) developed a project of revitalization of villages through restoring traditional buildings in Croatia. The presentation (power-point) will focus on two examples of restoration activity undertaken for different types of houses in two different areas: a traditional East Slavonia sun-dried brick house in Erdut and Dalj vine-growing area, with collaboration of volunteers from a regional organization and a local Society of Hungarian Minority – thus promoting intercultural dialogue; the other is a wooden type of house with thatched roof in a hilly Zagorje area of North-West Croatia, where we support the local community of Bednja and their voluntary heritage initiatives. The aim of this project is also to establish a network of people and organizations involved in heritage conservation and management, as well as producing a practical publication/video for the local population interested in restoration process of their traditional architecture.
