This paper discusses and analyzes several films shown at the Cinema One Originals Movie Festival 2013 using communication theories. It summarizes three of the films - Blue Bustamante, Shift, and Kabisera - and discusses how concepts like social penetration theory, expectancy violation theory, cognitive dissonance theory, and reinforcement theory are demonstrated in key scenes. It also provides a brief overview of the restored classic film Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon? and how uncertainty reduction theory is portrayed.

2. I.
I am gifted and blessed to watch the six award winning movies of Cinema One Originals 2013, including the restoration of the movie Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon? This only proves that Filipino movies are best and truly worth watching for. My three top picks in the movie festival are Blue Bustamante, Shift, and Kabisera there are some scenes in the movies where the communication theories were applied.
“Blue Bustamante”
The film was directed by Mico Livelo, The story is all about George Bustamante played by Joem Bascon, an engineer, who tried his luck in Japan to have more income that can sustain the needs of his family. He became an OFW hoping that his family would have a convenient and comfortable life and after all that he been through in to look for another job he failed together with his new friend played by Rodolfo “Jun” Sabayton Roger a Filipino whofind his luck as a production assistant in a TV show that someday he would be a fomous artist in Japan. In a TV series named FIVE FORCE Geroge played the role of blue force as a stunt man double because he has a masculine type of body. Without Roger, George would become unemployed and he cannot pursue the needs of his family. Upon the Social Penetration Theory the developing friendship of the George and Roger the deeper they know each other the foundation of their relationship became stronger so they help each other and would not end up anything. Next is when George had a hard time with his co-worker Saito every time when they talk to each other it always went wrong and he is always intimidated by the looks and approach of Saito. This is an example of Attribution Theory because the reason behind the scene is Saito has a bad sight and George doesn’t understand Nihonggo. Last scene is when George and his wife June played by Dimples Romana had phone conversation forcing his husband to tell what is really his job he tried to lie he is wandering his wife would be angry if he tell the truth, Interpersonal Deception Theory is being applied.
“Shift”
The film was directed by Siege Ledesma. The story is related to the real life story of the director to inspire youth to love people whatever they are and who they are as long as you love each other. The story is about Estela played by Yeng Constantino who worked as a call center agent that has goal to have a lot of money to sustain her needs and her dreams. In the scene where he met Trevor his gay workmate try to exchange their names and try to know each other the theory of Social Penetration if applied. In the scene where Kevin offer Estela to have a breakfast, suddenly in their conversation Kevin said that he likes Stella but she refuses because
3. it’s too late because she is in love with Trevor. Expectancy Violation Theory is applied because he anticipated what Estela was about going to say about his confession.
On the scene where Stella is avoiding Trevor and he has no idea what is the real reason behind it. It started when he has an affair with a foreign guy named Drake. Estela did not answer his phone calls and email messages she always ignore Trevor Cognitive Dissonance Theory was applied. It was a heart falling because in the end they did not tell the truth that they have feelings with each other despite what circumstances they have.
“Kabisera”
The film was directed by Alfonso Borgy Torre. The film was named best picture in the Cinema One Originals 2013. The story is all about Andres a padre de familia who found illegal drugs in the sea when he was fishing. When he tell it with his best friend immediately his friend offered his help for the selling of the meth, Reinforcement Theory was applied because at first they didn’t want to sell it especially the wife of Andres until they are manipulated with what would they get if they sell it so they agreed and accepted the plan of his husband friend. Second is when Andres, Jose, and Pablo were planning how to sell the meth’s this scene shows Elaboration and Likelihood method. We can say that the central route is the carefully planning of the selling of meth to whom and how they distribute the meth and the Peripheral route is selling it to young people didn’t notice what would be the outcome and possible risk they will encounter after they sell it. Lastly is when Andres and his friend has drinking session the topic of their discussion is all about their past experiences and how did they became friends The Social Penetration Theory is applied because remembering their memories tells the deeper of their friendship has.
II. Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?
The film Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon a classic movie directed by Eddie Romero year 1976 and which was digitally restored by ABS-CBN Film and Archives and Central Digital Lab. The movie had a special screening in the second day of the Cinema One Originals Movie Campus Festival featuring the selected movie entries from the C1 Originals Movie Festival last year. The movie revolves about the colonization of the Spaniards in the Philippines; Spaniards claim that they are the true Filipinos because they have the power and education. Filipinos just accepted what Spaniards gave to them also known as Indio’s. They don’t have the power and courage to speak for them because they are scared what would Spaniards may do to them.
The movie presents what is happening in the past and how Filipinos were treated by colonizers one of them is the character of Nicolas Kulas Ocampo roled by the veteran actor Christoper De Leon. Kulas is one of the Filipino who is being fooled and abused by the Spanish Government and it suddenly stops when he met Padre Gil he was given a lot of wealth because of a simple
4. favor to bring the son of Padre Gil to him. He also met Mang Tibor a lawyer he was enlightened with the different meaning of Filipino, one said you must be born and in the country and must be an intelligent man while the other is you must be born and raised in the country. In the end Kulas realized the true meaning of a Filipino; the true Filipino is someone who loves the country not what you have. We also Filipinos must be blamed of because we Filipino must role as Filipino and we must learn how should be a Filipino because being a Filipino is not only by name not by physical but who we show ourselves to anyone who had stepped in our beloved island. We Filipinos must fight for our freedom and it has been made in the history were our ancestors and beloved countrymen who fight for it and show patriotism. The movie portrayed evidently with Uncertainty Reduction Theory.
