2. Overview of the Website
• One of the ancillary products that needed to be produced was a website.
• This website was produced to further establish a sense of brand
awareness due to the similar house styles it presented to the DigiPak and
the main music video product.
• The website not only acts as a way of establishing brand awareness to
the target audience, but it also acts as a marketing scheme to sell the
brand and the other products due to the fact they can be seen on the
website and interacted with.
• The website conforms to the conventions of pop genre, further
establishing a house style amongst all three products due to similar font
and colour schemes.
• Overall it was produced for the target audience of teenagers to adults’
entertainment, and to establish brand awareness for the audience to
recognise and associate the products music with.
3. Home Page
The home page of the website is by far the most important due to the fact it is the first thing in which the audience will see when they find first begin searching on the website. The main
focus of the page is the title and the tabs underneath used to navigate throughout the pages on the site. This is presented as the main focus due to its positioning and size on the screen.
The title and tabs are in the centre of the page located at the top roughly at eye level meaning the audience will notice this straight away.
This is essential due to the fact the title of the website presents the brands name, which is what the audience needs to know in order to establish a sense of brand awareness, therefore
this must be the main focus of the websites home page. The second noticeable thing on the home page is the presentation of the main music video product directly underneath the title
and tabs. This acts as a marketing scheme, as not only can this video be accessed via YouTube and social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, but can be found on the official
“Mission 808” website. The presentation of the music video on the official website also establishes brand awareness further, as the audience can begin to relate the website with the
main product and therefore recognise the type of music and videos in which the brand produces.
Furthermore, another key feature of the website which is noticeable by the audience is the background style used. Although this is present throughout all the pages within the website, it
is first noticed on the home page as something significant when the audience first uses the website. The background consists of a tile styled layout of the members of the mission 808
groups faces, in a multi-coloured colour scheme inspired by Andy Warhol's 1970’s pop art. This is key due to the fact it establishes to the audience who the “stars” of the group are
relating to Richard Dyers star theory, as the stars are constructed as being seen as the most significant characters due to the background scheme used on the website presenting their
faces.
This further establishes brand awareness as it signals to the audience who the main focus of the brand are. This also makes it easier for the audience to idolise. Other smaller features of
the website include a small weekly competition question box on the side, mainly added for aesthetics, but also used as a way to invite the audience in, making the product seem more
user friendly and interactive. This causes the audience to want to continue using the rest of the website, as well as making the audience want to follow the “mission 808 brand”.
All these features on the home page conform to the conventions of pop genre. This is due to the bright vibrant colour schemes used as well as the clear presentation of the main product
which is a pop genre music video itself. The use of the bright vibrant colours located within the background as well as the title and text provoke a sense of happiness, as pop genre is
typically associated with bright vibrant colours due to its conventions. It subconsciously reminds the audience that bright noticeable colours in pop genre can be associated with clubbing
and partying, which is further emphasised through the use of the music video on the Home Page.
4. Gallery Page
The gallery page consists of some of the same conventions as the home page such as the background, as the presence of the title and tabs at the top of the
page. The main key new feature seen on this page is the use of various pictures presented from different locations and time periods. This was inspired by Ellie
Gouldings website, in which she also includes a gallery page including pictures of herself as well as friends and her life. This is used as a technique to invite the
viewing audience into the personal lives of the members of the group. It makes the group members seem more trustworthy, also establishing star identity. This
relationship in which the use of the gallery page establishes between the audience and the group members of “mission 808” is key in attracting the audience to
want to view the products associated with the brand. The fact that the pictures can be scrolled through with the use of the arrows as buttons makes the site
more interactive, further conforming to pop genre due to the fact that the website is lively, a typical association of pop genre. The use of the pictures is more of
an informal thing to do, also conforming to pop genre as many pop genre music videos and the conventions associated with it are considered informal,
particularly having fun at clubs and partying. The individual pictures themselves portray various locations in which the music video product was shot in, as well
as other locations and events purely documented for entertainment purposes only such as other house parties not seen within the music video. This further
invites the audience in to the group members lives, but more importantly keeps the conventions of pop genre flowing throughout the entire website. This is due
to the fact that the viewing audiences can associate the pictures of people having fun at parties with their own individual experiences they may have had
themselves before. It acts as a way to remind people of the positive happy emotions felt when having fun with friends at parties and when going out.
5. I think we have used images well on this page, especially in the respect of informing the audience of who we are. Firstly, we have the individual images of ourselves in the background with the
different colours over the top (again, conforming to the conventions of the genre in relation to bright colours), then we have the picture that is split into four photos of us which is on the main
body of the page. The text that accompanies the pictures is relevant and explains our journey as a group having come from being four solo artists. The other image was taken at one of the house
party locations, we added this in order to show the audience the type of reaction other people are feeling because of our work – which is satisfaction and enjoyment. The images on the front of
the digipak (right column of website) are the same as the colourful background image but with a different colour effect over the faces.
We have used this page and the other pages of the website to advertise our upcoming album that is soon to be released, this is effective because people will visit our website to find out more
about us and then see that we have an album coming out soon and would be keen to want to listen to it. On the left hand column of the page we have a weekly competition that we have
created, this is where the person on the page can choose/guess an answer. This all contributes to engaging the audience into the website, however, most importantly it helps them engage with us
in a way that they are able to find out more about each individual band member.
We have tried to make the ‘About Us’ page as user friendly as possible in order to encourage the target audience to use the website in a positive way. In order to make it user friendly we had to
ensure that it was aesthetically pleasing and easy for the audience to use, otherwise they would be less likely to look through it thoroughly, we made the website look appealing to the audience by
adding a lot of images on each page to go with the text, this could mean that when the audience is flicking through the pages of the website they would be more likely to stay on a page having
been drawn in by the interesting pictures.
As our products belong to the dance genre, it is important that we include the typical conventions of the dance genre in our product, on this page of the website we have ensured that we have
developed a good use of colour, as one of the conventions is that a dance genre video typically has bright and vibrant colours in order to attract the audience and make the setting look more
appealing. We have used a wide range of colours but the most predominant colours that we have tried to use mostly on the page are purple and yellow.
Towards the bottom of the page we have the grey section, included in this section is more options to explore the website, they are some of the same tabs that are at the top of the page but they
have a picture and an enticing sentence of information with them. By having ‘Read More’ under these tabs we are encouraging the audience to click it and read on more about it. The 7 small tabs
at the top of the page have been made so that they are the same shape as the big outer shape containing the band name.
About Us Page
6. The main body of the page is split into three sections as there are three different news articles. Firstly, is the announcement of tour dates, the second is the release of the new music video,
and lastly is the upcoming twitter question and answer session. We have included images to go with the relevant news articles in order to entice the audience into reading the text. For the
first article we have an image of a character listening to music through the headphones, and listening to music is associated with going on tour and visiting your favourite bands. The image
associated with the release of the new music video is a photo that was taken at one of the party locations during the filming process, this is appropriate because the performs are having a
good time, which is the message we want to portray to the audience. Finally, the twitter icon is the image we have put next to the Q&A information as it is commonly recognised.
We have ensured that we have stuck to the colour scheme throughout this page, we have used predominantly yellow and purple colours for the text, this is the same as the other pages on
the website and conforms to continuity. As our product needs to fit into the dance genre, it is important that we consider the use of colour because it is a vital convention in being able to
please our target audience. The ‘Latest News!’ text at the top of this page has purposely been written in yellow so it stands our more to the audience. If we have text that stands out more
to the audience, they are likely to read it and become more intrigued to read on and recommend our band/site to their friends.
The ‘NEWS’ tab at the top of the page is coloured in grey and the text is highlighted in yellow. This is to remind the performer of which page they are currently on. This happens on each of
the different pages should the audience want to view another page. If you hover the cursor on your cursor on your webpage over another tab it will turn the text green and the box grey,
this is to make viewing purposes more easier and convenient. The needs of our target audience (teenagers and young adults) is that they stereotypically, are more attracted to things with
bright colours. This is good for us as our website conforms to this need.
There are two hyperlink buttons on the ‘News’ page, the first button is to find out more information about upcoming your dates, clicking this button will take you to the tour dates page,
we have done this so that we can persuade the audience to visit as many pages as possible.
The second hyperlink button is related to the twitter question and answer session, we want people to view and follow our twitter page and by having a link that goes directly to our twitter
page is a good way of promoting the band to the target audience.
Similarly to the other pages on the website, there is the grey bar along the bottom that shows some of the other pages on the site. Where this part of the page is a different colour it is
distinctive compared to the rest of the page, therefore more noticeable. The colourful main background that we have contrasts to the black background of the page, making the text on the
black background a lot more easy on the eye. Overall, I think the colours that we have used will benefit us in attracting our target audience.
