Editor’s Desk
Era of Digital Disruption: World’s largest enterprises are transforming their
businesses for an increasingly digital world. When Apple, Alphabet (aka Google),
Amazon and Facebook as the top four digital enterprises command over $1.7
trillion in market capitalization, it’s clear that Enterprises of the world have no
choice but to go Digital to succeed in the era of Digital disruption.
On the other hand, the average life span of enterprises on S&P 500 has reduced
from 60 to just about 20 years (refer Figure 1). The mix of industry domain in the
dominant enterprises by market cap have shifted from traditional heavy industries,
to oil and now to technology enterprises (refer Figure 2).
SMACIT (Social, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud & Internet of Things) are driving paradigm
shift of digital disruption in the global economy and the convergence of these
technologies is fueling faster growth in market capitalization. While Digital
disruption is forcing many companies to remodel their business, the race to reach
market capitalization of $1 billion has drastically become quicker. (Refer Figure 3)
COVER STORY CONTD
In the above scenario it has become important for all of us as practioners of Project Management to quickly align to the new
developments and be agile enough to adapt to the new world of digital disruption.
Kindle, iPhone, iPad, 3G, 4G, Uber, Airbnb, Android, Oculus, Spotify, Nest, Kickstarter, Stripe, Square, Paytm, BookMyShow, Ola, Myntra,
UrbanClap, Firstcry, UrbanLadder Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp – are few technologies, products & services which never existed a
decade before in year 2006!
This article, talks about the future of project management in an era of Digital disruption
Future of Project Management: The rise of digital disruption is one of the major driving force for advancement &enhancement of Project
Management practice. This strategic shift is called for in following areas;
1. Waterfall Vs Agile
2. Scattered Project Managers in Matrix Organization Vs Deployment of PMO as a central strategic function
3. Requirement Management Vs Complexity Management
4. Use of proprietary PM tools Vs Cloud based PM tools
5. Business as Usual Vs Innovation
6. Project Outcome Vs Customer Value
7. Technical Skills Vs Soft Skills
8. Limiting Role of PM to Project Management Vs PM as a strategic leader
COVER STORY CONTD
Pillars driving the future of Project Management Practice
Recognition of Project Management practice by Regulatory [4] - The US government have recognized the importance of program
management and have recently passed an act named PMIAA. President Barack Obama has signed into law S.1550, the Program
Management Improvement and Accountability Act of 2015 (PMIAA), which will enhance accountability and best practices in project and
program management throughout the federal government. The reforms outlined in the PMIAA are consistent with PMI member input
and research that shows that organizations that invest in program management talent and standards improve outcomes, accountability
and efficiency. The legislation, strongly endorsed by the Project Management Institute (PMI), was approved by both chambers of
Congress with overwhelming bi-partisan support. President Obama signed it into law on Wednesday, December 14, 2016. The PMIAA
reforms federal program management policy in four important ways:
•Creating a formal job series and career path for program managers in the federal government.
•Developing a standards-based program management policy across the federal government.
•Recognizing the essential role of executive sponsorship and engagement by designating a senior executive in federal agencies to
be responsible for program management policy and strategy.
•Sharing knowledge of successful approaches to program management through an interagency council on program management.
Technology & Innovation - Technology and Innovation are the life blood of digital disruption which will drive the next wave of change in
enterprises over the next decade. Project Managers would have to foster new ideas and adapt to innovation by participating in new
initiatives and organization imperatives. Project Managers would need to familiarize to new technologies i.e. IoT, Drones, Block chain, Big
Data, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, 3D Printing, Virtual Reality, Robotics, Genetics to name a few.
As a special initiative/project, the project manager can propose enterprise innovation team by creating a strong innovation and customer
immersion lab. This will allow project manager to get the stakeholders to collaborate to create new product, services & experiences
driven by new technologies, this will help the enterprise get into new markets before competitors.
New Business Models – Often, to change the game, the model of business is refreshed, hence the project managers would have to adapt
to the styles of evolving business models i.e. Sharing, Crowd sourcing, Freemium, pay as you go, Subscription, Productized & User
Community driven are the few to name. The Project Manager would become a key stakeholder in redefining “success recipe” of the
business model of the enterprise and its journey from the current to the new business model.
COVER STORY CONTD
Culture – Culture is the environment you create for digital disruption to survive and thrive. Culture is what can also kill the enterprise.
Creating a self-sustaining learning culture with active participation of millennial workforce would be one of the key challenges. The
Project Manager would have to master the art of engaging stakeholders using social media where the millennial workforce is available on
24x7 basis. The Project Manager would have to realign traditional stakeholder roles and expectations and work with the best performers,
decision makers and problem solvers. Thus, a project manager can stay ahead of competitors by developing and leading the most
efficient, effective and agile team within the enterprise.
Leadership Styles – As business author Lawrence Haughton said, “It’s not the big that eat the small…it’s the fast that eat the slow”. The
Project Manager would be required to upgrade from a traditional leadership style to be an influencer, visionary, and inspirer to create an
enterprise that fully focuses on customer value, communication & collaboration and agility which makes it faster than its local and global
competitors.
Continuous learning & Volunteering - Take one more learning course to expose yourself to a new technological or marketing skill, or
renew an existing certification by updating existing knowledge you’ve already gained. This will help support the project manager’s
personal growth & skillset to be ready for practicing project management in the era of digital disruption. Check out different options
available at PMI, EdX, Coursera & other online and offline training providers.
Practice of Project Management & Project Manager would have to be agile enough to adapt to the wave of digital disruption.
Conclusion
We are entering a period in which “there will be no long-term predictability” in enterprise, according to Accenture CEO Pierre Nanterme.
“Leaders will need to learn to manage chaos and to do it in a highly disciplined way.”

.
After getting PMP certified on May 2013, I decided to join
as PMIWBC volunteer in the training portfolio to collect PDU
which is required to renew the PMP certification but after
joining I realized its something more than this. It helped me to
keep myself updated with the PMI's new developments also
to interact with several professionals from various renowned
companies and their experiences which helped me a lot to
develop myself as a professional. I am feeling very proud to
say that within 6 months of joining I was appreciated as the
“VOQ- Autumn 2014". Volunteering my time for chapter
increased my opportunities for leadership ,collaboration,
networking and enhanced my professional profile. I can add
this volunteer experience in linked in profile too and it is
equally valuable as paid work experience. I have integrated
this with my professional profile and got the benefit in my job-
life. Overall its a good experience and will continue the same
in coming years.
Volunteering in PMI West Bengal Chapter is
something I always look forward to. Helping in the
activities of the Chapter gives a sense of
achievement and satisfaction that we are doing
something in this region and taking the PMI West
Bengal to the people. Apart from the happiness
we also get the opportunity to interact and create
networking with people in Project Management
field. I urge people to become an active volunteer
and participate in various affairs organised by the
chapter, form networking, make friends, add
PDUs, renew the certificate, take guidance on
career and certification and to get new learning
experience.
It was indeed a pleasant experience to receive the recognition
for volunteering work for the PMI West Bengal Chapter
(PMIWBC) in the AGM on 19-Sep-2015. The journey started
off with being a faculty for the PMP exam preparation session
in Feb 2015 and then the other opportunities followed. It
helped me to reach out to and network with professionals
beyond my organization. This recognition from the chapter
was also appreciated by PMI India and coined as setting an
example how a Champion can collaborate with the Chapter.
Such opportunities from PMIWBC helped me with a platform
for learning and sharing, and personally contribute to
corporate social responsibility initiatives of my organization
I have a passion for writing and by volunteering with PMI, I have got one of
the platform to explore my ideas and expressions. PMI WB has given me the
opportunity to sharpen my leadership skills, improving communication
capabilities, identifying my limits and strengths, showing positive impact in my
careers and help to build the network and relationships with large pool of
professionals of different industries and associations. The chapter gives me
the opportunity to connect with people of common interests but different
cultural norms. Involving with the chapter give additional experiences that I
haven't got in day to day work. Love to work with the people who are
passionate to share their knowledge and experiences for a cause. By
volunteering with PMI WB Chapter , only I can quote some famous words by
Helen Keller " I am only one, but still i am one. I can not do everything, but
still I can do something. And because I can not do everything, I will not refuse
to do something that I can do."

Are we volunteering enough?
In an academic paper titled “Is Volunteering Rewarding in Itself?”, published on March 2004, the authors Stephan Meier and Alois Stutzer in
their conclusion mention: People who place more importance on extrinsic life goals benefit less from volunteering. Volunteering increases
happiness, which in turn increases the likelihood of volunteering. Happy people are more likely to volunteer.
The question then arises why more people do not volunteer in order to increase their life satisfaction. Do people underestimate the
benefits from intrinsic tasks like volunteering while they overestimate the value of e.g. additional time spent in profession, with family or in
leisure activities? Would Volunteering increase if the academic institutions, private and public enterprises promote the need for past
community services as a prerequisite for admission to a certain college or for employment in higher positions? Or the absence of
Institutional design, to mentor and guide the young volunteers is the reason behind low retention levels?
Possibly more research on the subject is required in the context of our country, state and local communities that we live in. But we do
strongly believe that if we in the eastern region of India are to overcome some of our inherent challenges that we seem to have been
burdened with, Volunteering across all age groups, gender and societal groups can play a significant role to bootstrap us and help the
society move faster in our journey to achieve growth and development.
Need a start … PMI West Bengal Chapter can be the point to start your journey of volunteering, write to us at

Future of Project Management in an era of "Digital Disruption"

  • 1. KO N N E C T ANNUAL E D I T I O N 2016 Cover Story: Future of Project Management in an era of “Digital Disruption” Dear Members, Wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year 2017. Hope you have cherished glorified moments in 2016 and your journey was fun filled. I would take the opportunity to thank you for participating in various chapter events in 2016 and your overwhelming response to volunteer for the PMI Regional Conference in April 2017 which is beyond appreciation. PMI Regional Conference in 2017 at Kolkata is first of its kind in Eastern India and shall act as a catalyst for networking and ultimately shall provide extended opportunities to collaborate with global market leaders. PMI West Bengal Chapter welcomes members to step forward and take the opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills to drive success for conference. The Chapter is also eager to hear from members and volunteers for any suggestions and ways to perform better. Looking for your magnum enthusiasm to raise the sprits of the game Cheers, Editor’s Desk Era of Digital Disruption: World’s largest enterprises are transforming their businesses for an increasingly digital world. When Apple, Alphabet (aka Google), Amazon and Facebook as the top four digital enterprises command over $1.7 trillion in market capitalization, it’s clear that Enterprises of the world have no choice but to go Digital to succeed in the era of Digital disruption. On the other hand, the average life span of enterprises on S&P 500 has reduced from 60 to just about 20 years (refer Figure 1). The mix of industry domain in the dominant enterprises by market cap have shifted from traditional heavy industries, to oil and now to technology enterprises (refer Figure 2). SMACIT (Social, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud & Internet of Things) are driving paradigm shift of digital disruption in the global economy and the convergence of these technologies is fueling faster growth in market capitalization. While Digital disruption is forcing many companies to remodel their business, the race to reach market capitalization of $1 billion has drastically become quicker. (Refer Figure 3)
  • 2. COVER STORY CONTD In the above scenario it has become important for all of us as practioners of Project Management to quickly align to the new developments and be agile enough to adapt to the new world of digital disruption. Kindle, iPhone, iPad, 3G, 4G, Uber, Airbnb, Android, Oculus, Spotify, Nest, Kickstarter, Stripe, Square, Paytm, BookMyShow, Ola, Myntra, UrbanClap, Firstcry, UrbanLadder Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp – are few technologies, products & services which never existed a decade before in year 2006! This article, talks about the future of project management in an era of Digital disruption Future of Project Management: The rise of digital disruption is one of the major driving force for advancement &enhancement of Project Management practice. This strategic shift is called for in following areas; 1. Waterfall Vs Agile 2. Scattered Project Managers in Matrix Organization Vs Deployment of PMO as a central strategic function 3. Requirement Management Vs Complexity Management 4. Use of proprietary PM tools Vs Cloud based PM tools 5. Business as Usual Vs Innovation 6. Project Outcome Vs Customer Value 7. Technical Skills Vs Soft Skills 8. Limiting Role of PM to Project Management Vs PM as a strategic leader
  • 3. COVER STORY CONTD Pillars driving the future of Project Management Practice Recognition of Project Management practice by Regulatory [4] - The US government have recognized the importance of program management and have recently passed an act named PMIAA. President Barack Obama has signed into law S.1550, the Program Management Improvement and Accountability Act of 2015 (PMIAA), which will enhance accountability and best practices in project and program management throughout the federal government. The reforms outlined in the PMIAA are consistent with PMI member input and research that shows that organizations that invest in program management talent and standards improve outcomes, accountability and efficiency. The legislation, strongly endorsed by the Project Management Institute (PMI), was approved by both chambers of Congress with overwhelming bi-partisan support. President Obama signed it into law on Wednesday, December 14, 2016. The PMIAA reforms federal program management policy in four important ways: •Creating a formal job series and career path for program managers in the federal government. •Developing a standards-based program management policy across the federal government. •Recognizing the essential role of executive sponsorship and engagement by designating a senior executive in federal agencies to be responsible for program management policy and strategy. •Sharing knowledge of successful approaches to program management through an interagency council on program management. Technology & Innovation - Technology and Innovation are the life blood of digital disruption which will drive the next wave of change in enterprises over the next decade. Project Managers would have to foster new ideas and adapt to innovation by participating in new initiatives and organization imperatives. Project Managers would need to familiarize to new technologies i.e. IoT, Drones, Block chain, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, 3D Printing, Virtual Reality, Robotics, Genetics to name a few. As a special initiative/project, the project manager can propose enterprise innovation team by creating a strong innovation and customer immersion lab. This will allow project manager to get the stakeholders to collaborate to create new product, services & experiences driven by new technologies, this will help the enterprise get into new markets before competitors. New Business Models – Often, to change the game, the model of business is refreshed, hence the project managers would have to adapt to the styles of evolving business models i.e. Sharing, Crowd sourcing, Freemium, pay as you go, Subscription, Productized & User Community driven are the few to name. The Project Manager would become a key stakeholder in redefining “success recipe” of the business model of the enterprise and its journey from the current to the new business model.
  • 4. COVER STORY CONTD Culture – Culture is the environment you create for digital disruption to survive and thrive. Culture is what can also kill the enterprise. Creating a self-sustaining learning culture with active participation of millennial workforce would be one of the key challenges. The Project Manager would have to master the art of engaging stakeholders using social media where the millennial workforce is available on 24x7 basis. The Project Manager would have to realign traditional stakeholder roles and expectations and work with the best performers, decision makers and problem solvers. Thus, a project manager can stay ahead of competitors by developing and leading the most efficient, effective and agile team within the enterprise. Leadership Styles – As business author Lawrence Haughton said, “It’s not the big that eat the small…it’s the fast that eat the slow”. The Project Manager would be required to upgrade from a traditional leadership style to be an influencer, visionary, and inspirer to create an enterprise that fully focuses on customer value, communication & collaboration and agility which makes it faster than its local and global competitors. Continuous learning & Volunteering - Take one more learning course to expose yourself to a new technological or marketing skill, or renew an existing certification by updating existing knowledge you’ve already gained. This will help support the project manager’s personal growth & skillset to be ready for practicing project management in the era of digital disruption. Check out different options available at PMI, EdX, Coursera & other online and offline training providers. Practice of Project Management & Project Manager would have to be agile enough to adapt to the wave of digital disruption. Conclusion We are entering a period in which “there will be no long-term predictability” in enterprise, according to Accenture CEO Pierre Nanterme. “Leaders will need to learn to manage chaos and to do it in a highly disciplined way.” This article is contributed by Chintan Oza ,Sr. Principal - Program Management, Tata Communications Ltd; Haas Alumnus, Sr. Member - IEEE, PMP, ITIL 2011, CSM, Paul Harris Fellow. After getting PMP certified on May 2013, I decided to join as PMIWBC volunteer in the training portfolio to collect PDU which is required to renew the PMP certification but after joining I realized its something more than this. It helped me to keep myself updated with the PMI's new developments also to interact with several professionals from various renowned companies and their experiences which helped me a lot to develop myself as a professional. I am feeling very proud to say that within 6 months of joining I was appreciated as the “VOQ- Autumn 2014". Volunteering my time for chapter increased my opportunities for leadership ,collaboration, networking and enhanced my professional profile. I can add this volunteer experience in linked in profile too and it is equally valuable as paid work experience. I have integrated this with my professional profile and got the benefit in my job- life. Overall its a good experience and will continue the same in coming years. Volunteering in PMI West Bengal Chapter is something I always look forward to. Helping in the activities of the Chapter gives a sense of achievement and satisfaction that we are doing something in this region and taking the PMI West Bengal to the people. Apart from the happiness we also get the opportunity to interact and create networking with people in Project Management field. I urge people to become an active volunteer and participate in various affairs organised by the chapter, form networking, make friends, add PDUs, renew the certificate, take guidance on career and certification and to get new learning experience. It was indeed a pleasant experience to receive the recognition for volunteering work for the PMI West Bengal Chapter (PMIWBC) in the AGM on 19-Sep-2015. The journey started off with being a faculty for the PMP exam preparation session in Feb 2015 and then the other opportunities followed. It helped me to reach out to and network with professionals beyond my organization. This recognition from the chapter was also appreciated by PMI India and coined as setting an example how a Champion can collaborate with the Chapter. Such opportunities from PMIWBC helped me with a platform for learning and sharing, and personally contribute to corporate social responsibility initiatives of my organization I have a passion for writing and by volunteering with PMI, I have got one of the platform to explore my ideas and expressions. PMI WB has given me the opportunity to sharpen my leadership skills, improving communication capabilities, identifying my limits and strengths, showing positive impact in my careers and help to build the network and relationships with large pool of professionals of different industries and associations. The chapter gives me the opportunity to connect with people of common interests but different cultural norms. Involving with the chapter give additional experiences that I haven't got in day to day work. Love to work with the people who are passionate to share their knowledge and experiences for a cause. By volunteering with PMI WB Chapter , only I can quote some famous words by Helen Keller " I am only one, but still i am one. I can not do everything, but still I can do something. And because I can not do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do." Congrats Pratik! Special Appreciation as “Volunteer of Quarter , Spring 2016” goes to Pratik Singh PMI West Bengal Chapter leadership would like to thank Anirban for his continuous contribution to the chapter initiatives for Training portfolio. Congrats Anirban! Volunteer of the Quarter - Autumn Special Appreciation as “Volunteer of Quarter , Autumn 2016” goes to Anirban Dasgupta Are we volunteering enough? In an academic paper titled “Is Volunteering Rewarding in Itself?”, published on March 2004, the authors Stephan Meier and Alois Stutzer in their conclusion mention: People who place more importance on extrinsic life goals benefit less from volunteering. Volunteering increases happiness, which in turn increases the likelihood of volunteering. Happy people are more likely to volunteer. The question then arises why more people do not volunteer in order to increase their life satisfaction. Do people underestimate the benefits from intrinsic tasks like volunteering while they overestimate the value of e.g. additional time spent in profession, with family or in leisure activities? Would Volunteering increase if the academic institutions, private and public enterprises promote the need for past community services as a prerequisite for admission to a certain college or for employment in higher positions? Or the absence of Institutional design, to mentor and guide the young volunteers is the reason behind low retention levels? Possibly more research on the subject is required in the context of our country, state and local communities that we live in. But we do strongly believe that if we in the eastern region of India are to overcome some of our inherent challenges that we seem to have been burdened with, Volunteering across all age groups, gender and societal groups can play a significant role to bootstrap us and help the society move faster in our journey to achieve growth and development. Need a start … PMI West Bengal Chapter can be the point to start your journey of volunteering, write to us at pmiwbc.membership@pmiwbc.org
