1. Research on teaser trailers, conventions and in trailers:
The thriller genre aims to create suspense, tension and excitement and the themes usually attached to thrillers are isolation, murder and pain. Our film Twisted fate is based on pain as these twins are re united but having two different perspectives of life. I am going to watch teaser trailers of thriller movies and talk about the conventions they have used to provide the narrative of the genre.
Scream 4:
This teaser trailer starts of with a green screen which writes “the following preview has been approved for appropriate audiences by the motion picture association of America, Inc.” Where from there a phone call is made with tension music used, which from this point the sound provides the information that the film is a thriller as the sound kicks in instantly. While the music continues I realised fast editing has been used which also is giving away the genre. As conventions attached to thrillers are fast editing and tension sound used. Where in this teaser trailer a great deal of fast editing and tension music is used, which makes me see the thriller in the film. Also there is a voice over which also allows the audience to understand the thriller aspect of the film as the voice has been suited for the sound that is used. Moreover the camera angles changes majority of the time which links with the fast past editing created. Right on 25 seconds of the teaser trailer a tittle is used which writes “one movie redefined fear” where the redefined fear is in red. This shows there is a representation of death and a dark side attached to the film which also provides the information that the film is thriller based as the colour representation that red contains. For the rest of the trailer fast editing has been used and there is a significance of red used throughout the teaser trailer. Also the killings are made at the night time which also shows there may be a convention attached to lightning in thrillers.
Therefore for our film we could use red because red represents love, revenge and death which we plan to use all these elements so red would be a good representation. As a result of viewing scream 4 I think when the guns are going get picked up by both the characters we need to shot the scenes in a low key lightning as this is part of a thriller convention since many thrillers use low key lighting. Therefore low key lightning is a convention attached to thrillers. Also v viewing this teaser trailer (scream 4) I have realised that our editing must be fast past to provide the thriller convention as the fast editing is one of the main conventions attached to thrillers.
Memento:
Although this film does not contain a teaser trailer I have decided to write about it because it contains two of the genres our film contains which is thriller and crime. In the official trailer to this film the main character speaks where he says “I have this condition it’s my memory. Since my injury I can’t make new memories everything fades if you talk for to long ill forget how we started and next time when I see you I’m not going to remember this conversation”. What fascinated me about this trailer is the end as there is a rewind of everything already shown and the voice over of what the guy said in the begging is combined with the rewind shots. This creates mystery and suspense, which is what we need to create. While watching this trailer I thought we could apply this rewind idea in out trailer as it grabbed my attention and I believe if we use this technique we could grab our audience’s attention, where they will feel suspense and mystery.
Taken:
This teaser trailer lasts 1.01 second and the genre to this film is thriller and crime. Again as scream 4 it starts of with the green screen where there is writing saying “the following….” Where from there fast shots of the production company are shown and then the sound kicks in. The sound that is used creates tension because ambient sounds are used. From there you here a scream this increases the excitement as the shots get faster and faster. Then a masculine voice is kicked in and the masculine voice has specifically been used because the shots used are glimpse shots from the film where you cannot understand what is going on, but you are attracted to the film as the sound and editing is fast paste that attracts an audience. The shots are dark and fast. Also many different angles are shot such as in the beginning of the film a close up shot of legs walking are shown and then a girl is grabbed under a bed. These different angle shots which have been edited really fast grabs the audience into the film even though there is not enough information provided. Therefore the fast editing and choice in music has produced tension, suspense and excitement, which is also our intention in our teaser trailer. I think this is a great inspiration and we could gain ideas from this teaser trailer as it covers many conventions attached to crime and thriller, such as low key lightning, fast editing and choice in sound.
Adulthood:
I have decided to look at this because although these films I have viewed will help us, adulthood will help us more because it is based in London and it tells the story of teenagers in London. This will be a good source to create Jermaine as his background is the same as the boys in the film. The trailer begins by a girl talking about her experience at the age of 15 this provides an insight of what the film may be about. In the next shoot slang is used with music suitable for the film this is all irrelevant to our film because we do not want speaking in our teaser trailer however a man joins the boy in the hood. I think this is a great shot of which we can gain inspiration because the man in the hood is a street boy by contrast the man who comes out the car speaks formal English this shows a difference between both characters. The reason I say this can be an inspiration for our film is the costume because there is clearly a distinction between both characters just like Jermaine and Jonathon. If there was no speaking in this scene we will automatically realise the difference between the characters through the way they are dressed. Therefore this trailer will provide us ideas of how we could present Jermaine.
Conclusion
As I have viewed these teaser trailers I have come to a conclusion of what conventions have been used and what elements we could use for our films teaser trailer. The conventions of a thriller have got to do with the way in which music and editing is used and having viewed memento, taken and scream 4 I have realised that they are all fast paste editing used in order to create excitement, suspense and tension we will need to make sure we input these conventions of a thriller through fast editing and use in sound. The music plays a significant role in providing the narrative and genre so therefore we must accurately choose what sound we will be using. Moreover technical issues also need to be covered meaning camera techniques and shots. We must think carefully what type of camera shot will be effective in the scenes we shoot. As we are going to use texts we should consider a voice over as well because these trailers contain dialogue and we have no dialogue if we were to add a voice over our teaser trailer may be more effective. Also costumes are symbolic of the genre and link to the convention of a thriller. For example in Taken the man is dressed in suits as he is powerful and the film is a thriller. We must think about our costumes and how they can symbolise our genre. Also having viewed these trailers I have realised that everything within the editing plays a significant role to produce the right out come as these thoughts and ideas give the product meaning and determine the response on the audience. Therefore everything must be thought about carefully.
